Cullowhee, N.C. -
A total of six Western Carolina men's and women's basketball games are scheduled to be broadcast during the 2012-13 season it was announced today as the Southern Conference unveiled its combined men's and women's basketball broadcast schedule.
WCU's broadcast slate gets underway with the season openers for both squads at mountain-rival, UNC Asheville, in the new Kimmel Arena. The Catamount men's game against the Bulldogs on Friday, Nov. 9 and the women's opener the following afternoon, Saturday, Nov. 10, will be televised by WMYA-TV, My 40, out of Asheville.
WMYA-TV - the sister station of WLOS-TV, Channel 13 - carried a home hoops double-header in the Ramsey Center during the 2011-12 season. The station was on-hand when the Catamount men downed two-time defending SoCon tournament champion, Wofford, 67-57, and the women hammered UNCG by a final score of 62-29 a year ago.
Since 2008, WMYA has carried six Western Carolina men's and women's basketball games - three at home and three on the road. The Catamount men and women are a combined 4-2 in those televised games with one of the losses coming in overtime at UNCA in the old Justice Center back in 2010.
In December, two of WCU's men's road games are slated to have television coverage. On Dec. 4, the Catamounts' game at Illinois will be carried on the Big Ten Network, with the Dec. 15 game at Georgetown from Washington, D.C., will be carried by the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN).
A fourth Catamount game will be available on ESPN3 as WCU visits archrival Appalachian State on Feb. 2 in Boone, N.C., with a possible date in the Ramsey Center in the 2013 ESPN BracketBuster available to be picked up for broadcast.
On the women's side, two games are currently denoted for broadcast beginning with the Nov. 10 season-opener at UNCA. The second date is Feb. 23 as the Catamounts visit Chattanooga in SoCon play in a game to be shown on ESPN3.
All told, ESPN3 will broadcast between 28 and 30 exclusive games involving Southern Conference men's basketball teams in 2012-13. Nineteen of those ESPN3 games will be produced by the conference office. In addition, the conference will produce eight women's basketball games, which will air exclusively on ESPN3. The SoCon will air five men's and women's basketball doubleheaders during the season. Southern Conference men's and women's teams will have a combined minimum of 90 institutional exposures in 2012-13.
