North Charleston, S.C. - At the annual Southern Conference Basketball Tip-off, taking place in North Charleston, S.C., the league's coaches picked the Western Carolina men's basketball team to tie for fifth in the six-team North Division in their preseason poll. The media poll tabbed the Catamounts to place fifth in the North, while the women's team was selected fifth in the 10-team league by the media.

WCU sophomore Kevin Martin (Zanesville, Ohio) and junior Tiffany Hamm (Harlan, Ky.) were selected by their respective SoCon coaches on their 10-member preseason all-conference teams. Martin, who was a Freshman All-American last season, ranked 11th in the nation in scoring last season (22.1 ppg) and ranked among the league's top 11 in six different categories. Hamm, the 2001 SoCon Freshman of the Year, averaged 10.8 points and 6.8 rebounds during an injury-plagued sophomore campaign.

Both the men's and women's basketball teams will begin preparations for the 2002-03 season on Saturday, Oct. 12, with their first day of official team practice. Also on the Saturday, the Western Carolina Athletics Department will induct Keith LeClair, Lori Lyons Wilson, Thomas "Bubba" Wilson, Paul Jones and Clyde Simmons into its Hall of Fame. The ceremony will begin at 10:30 am on the Ramsey Center concourse and is open to the public.
