CULLOWHEE, N.C. --- Kelvin Wylie, a 6-7 forward from Gardner-Webb, has transferred to Western Carolina announced Catamount head coach Steve Shurina on Monday afternoon. Due to NCAA regulations, Wylie will sit out the 2000-01 season since he is transferring to another Division I institution.
"Kelvin signed with Gardner-Webb originally , knowing that Gardner-Webb was making the transition to Division I," commented Shurina. "Without question, he is a D-I caliber player."
Last season at Gardner-Webb, Wylie ranked second nationally with a 65.3 field goal percentage. He was the team's top rebounder with 8.2 boards per game and second in scoring, averaging 14.1 points per contest. He helped GWC claim a share of the South Atlantic Conference regular season title last season and a bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
"All three of our assistant coaches recruited him previously and all three of them were very excited about adding him to our roster," stated Shurina. "He is a great athlete and will be a seasoned veteran when he becomes eligible to play next season."
Upon graduation from Rock Hill High School, Wylie signed with Spartanburg Methodist College, where he played for two seasons. Wylie helped SMC reach the national junior college tournament as a sophomore.
