Catamount head men's basketball coach Steve Shurina announced that Trey Hopkins signed a National Letter of intent to attend Western Carolina University. Hopkins is a 6-1, 175 guard from Orlando, Fla. and attends Dr. Phillips High School.

Hopkins was an honorable mention All-State selection during his senior season and led Dr. Phillips High to 20-7 record overall and a No. 1 ranking in the biggest high school classification (6A) in Florida. He also helped Phillips HS to a perfect 14-0 record in the Metro Conference and was a first team all-conference selection, as well as second team All-Orange County. As a senior, Hopkins posted 14.1 points per game, 4.4 rebounds and 4.1 assists, while averaging 19.9 ppg as a junior at Cypress Creek HS.

"Trey is a classic combo guard in the truest sense of the word," Shurina said. "He is equally adept at playing shooting guard or the point guard positions. He shoots the ball extremely well from 3-point range and plays with great courage."

Hopkins joins Negus McKenna (Montreal, Quebec) and Jarmar Jenkins (Chapel Hill, Tenn.) who signed with the Catamounts as a part of the 2004-05 freshman class.
