Cullowhee, N.C. -
Western Carolina head basketball coach Steve Shurina has announced that David Berghoefer has signed a National Letter of Intent.
Berghoefer (Middleton, Wisc./Middleton HS) was named "top center in the state" by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The 6-10, 220-pounder was named to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches All-Star Team and honorable mention All-State by the Associated Press. Berghoefer was All-Big Eight Conference, after leading his league in scoring (16.0 ppg) and rebounding (9.1 rpg). He was also tabbed all-area, averaging 2.1 blocks per game.
"We are very fortunate to sign a player like David who is 6-10 and possesses the kinds of skills he has," Shurina said. "He has really good hands and the ability to shoot the jump shot. His frame is capable of putting on more weight very quickly."
Berghoefer is the second student-athlete to sign with the Catamounts for the 2002-03 season. Last fall, Western signed 6-6 wing Corey Muirhead. Muirhead, who hails from York, Ontario, attended Milliken Mills High School, but is a native of St. James, Jamaica. He averaged 24 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots per game as a senior. Muirhead was named to the Toronto Star's Fab 5 and was honored along with the other four recipients at a Toronto Raptors-Miami Heat game. He was also voted one of the top 10 players in Ontario by the Toronto Sun. Muirhead led the Milliken Mills Knights to the Provincial Championships this past season.
"Corey started the year as an unknown in Toronto," Shurina said. "He had an unbelievable year in being named one of the top 5 in Ontario. Corey still does not know how good he can be. He has unlimited potential. He has very long arms, is very athletic and can shoot the ball very well."
