Western Carolina Reassigns Men's Head Basketball Coach Steve Shurina

April 14, 2005

Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina University Director of Athletics Chip Smith announced today (Thursday, April 14) that head men's basketball coach Steve Shurina has been reassigned to another position within the university effectively immediately.

"There has been a more thorough review of the basketball program and a chance to reflect on the program and its direction," Smith said. "In evaluating the accomplishments of the program over the past few years and the strategy for future success, I believe it is appropriate to make this change. We have said previously that we will honor Steve's contract and we will do so, although he will be reassigned to a teaching position for the duration of that contract."

A national search for a new head men's basketball coach will begin immediately. Smith said he hopes to have the position filled as quickly as possible.

"We appreciate Steve Shurina and his staff for their service to Western Carolina, however we feel a change in direction is necessary at this time in order to move the men's basketball program forward," he said.

Shurina has been head coach of the Catamount basketball program since April 2000, compiling a record of 48-97 over five seasons.
