Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina All-America candidate Kevin Martin, who ranks second in the nation in scoring 24.9 ppg, was named to the 10-member United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) All-District III team, which includes all NCAA Division I student-athletes from the states of Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

A 6-7 junior guard from Zanesville, Ohio, Martin was a second team USBWA All-District III selection. First team honorees include N.C. State's Julius Hodge, Duke's J.J. Redick, Duke's Chris Duhon, Wake Forest's Justin Gray and North Carolina's Rashad McCants. Joining Martin on the second team were North Carolina's Sean May, Wake Forest's Chris Paul, Duke's Luol Deng and Duke's Shelden Williams.

Martin, who ranked 11th in the NCAA in scoring as a freshman and 10th as a sophomore, not only ranks second nationally in scoring, but finished as the Southern Conference's leading scorer for a second consecutive season. He was the first player to accomplish the feat since former Catamount and two-time SoCon Player of the Year Frankie King in the 1993-94 and 1994-95 seasons.

Previously tabbed to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District 5 second team this past February, Martin additionally was named to the SoCon Coaches all-league team for the third consecutive year and earned his second straight first team All-SoCon honor from the league's media, earning second team honors by the media as a freshman. He is just one of two Catamounts to be a three-time All-SoCon pick, joining Terry Boyd from 1991-93.

Martin has scored 1,838 points through three seasons at Western. His total ranks fourth on the WCU all-time list, while ranking as Catamounts' leading scorer since the school joined the NCAA Division I ranks for the 1976-77 season. Western Carolina's all-time top three scorers include Henry Logan (3,290 points from 1965-68), Mel Gibson (2,021 points from 1960-63) and Ronald Rogers (1,960 points from 1950-53). Martin also ranks among the WCU career leaders in 3-pointers made (third with 174), 3-pointers attempted (third with 503), free throws made (third with 534) and steals (ninth with 134). While he still has one more year to complete, his career scoring average of 23.3 currently ranks third and his 84.1 career free throw percentage currently ranks second.

On the WCU single-season lists, his 673 points in 2003-04 ranks ninth, his 24.9 season scoring average ranks eighth and his 206 free throws made ranks sixth.
