Cullowhee, N.C. -
Western Carolina junior center David Berghoefer was honored by the Southern Conference Sports Media Association by being named to its All-Conference third team, the organization announced today.
Berghoefer (Cross Plains, Wis./Middleton HS) is the only player in the SoCon to rank among the league's top seven in both scoring and rebounding. He is sixth in scoring (15.0 ppg) and is the only non-guard ranked among the top seven in scoring. He additionally ranks fifth in rebounds (8.0 rpg), while ranking second in the SoCon in double-doubles with eight.
Berghoefer is also in select company as he, and fellow All-SoCon picks Ronnie Burrell (UNC Greensboro) and Jean Francois (Georgia Southern) are the only three players to rank among the league's top 15 in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage. Berghoefer is 6th, 5th and 12th in the three categories, respectively, while Burrell is 4th, 8th and 11th and Francois is 8th, 6th and 15th.
Since missing the Davidson game with an injury on Jan. 19, the 6-10, 230-pounder is averaging 17.6 points and 9.5 rebounds over the last 10 games, including four double-doubles. He ranks second in the SoCon in offensive boards with an average of 3.39 per contest, while ranking eighth in defensive rebounds (4.61) and 12th in field goal percentage (.510). Berghoefer has been Western's leading scorer 11 times this season and the leading rebounder in 19 of his 28 games played.
Berghoefer was named SoCon Player of the Week on Feb. 9 after averaging 20 points and 11 rebounds for the week. He scored 16 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds in Western's game at the College of Charleston, scoring 10 of WCU's final 20 points versus the Cougars to pull the Catamounts to within three late in the contest. Berghoefer then posted game highs in both points (24) and rebounds (11) in WCU's meeting with Appalachian State. He was additionally tabbed Arby's/Catamount Student-Athlete of the Month for December after he averaged 13.3 points in the Catamounts' seven games during the month, which included a season-high 22 points in the Dec. 1 victory over Liberty. Berghoefer also helped the Catamounts record their first-ever victory over a Conference USA opponent, which was also just the ninth SoCon triumph in 52 chances versus C-USA since 1996-97.
With 845 points in his career to date, Berghoefer is on pace to become the 34th Catamount to score 1,000 points before he graduates. With a game-high 14 rebounds versus UNC Greensboro (recording his second double-double vs. the Spartans) in the regular-season finale, he surpassed 500 rebounds for his career, now with 502. While reaching those milestones is impressive, it is even more so considering he only scored 90 points and had just 70 rebounds in his freshman season. In his first two years combined, he only had 27 assists, 15 blocked shots and 30 steals. This season alone, he already has 28 assists, 11 blocks and 35 steals.
Berghoefer and the Catamounts will face Georgia Southern on Wednesday (Mar. 2) at 2:30 pm in the first round of the 2005 Kyocera Southern Conference Championship, played in Chattanooga, Tenn., at The McKenzie Arena. The winner of that contest will face UNC Greensboro on Thursday at 2:30 pm.
