Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina freshman Kevin Martin was named second team All-Southern Conference by the league's sports media association (SCSMA) today. Previously, Martin was named to the coaches' 10-man all-conference team.

Martin (Zanesville, Ohio) currently ranks 10th in the nation in scoring with a 22.3 average. He additionally ranked second in the league in scoring, while ranking fourth in free throw percentage (.834), fifth in steals (1.89), fifth 3-pointers made (2.67), eighth in 3-point percentage (.388) and 12th in field goal percentage. He led all SoCon freshmen in field goal percentage and was the second-leading freshman scorer in the nation.

The last Catamount to be honored by both the league's coaches and media in the same season was Bobby Phillips in 1997. That year, Phillips was also a first team pick by the coaches and a second team selection by the media.

Martin will lead Western Carolina as the fourth-seeded Catamounts face Furman, the fifth-seed out of the SoCon South in the first round of the 2002 Mountain Dew Southern Conference Championship. The annual event is being held in Charleston, S.C., at the North Charleston Coliseum. WCU and the Paladins will play at 6:00 pm.
