Cullowhee, N.C. -
Western Carolina head men's basketball coach Steve Shurina announced today that junior guard Corey Muirhead has been granted an indefinite leave of absence from the team, effective immediately. The York, Ontario, native has played in 24 games this season, starting 17, while averaging 9.7 points and 4.3 rebounds.
"Corey needs to figure some things out right now," Shurina said. "Our concern is with Corey and his welfare. Corey and I will meet again at the end of the season to determine his future with this program."
Muirhead ranks second on the team in scoring (9.7 points). He scored a season-high 19 points versus East Tennessee State on Jan. 10, but has only reached double figures once since then, an 11-point performance at Elon this past Saturday. For his career to date, Muirhead has scored 665 points (8.4 ppg) and grabbed 349 rebounds (4.4 rpg).
Western Carolina will host Chattanooga this Thursday (Feb. 17) at 7 pm in the Ramsey Activity Center. The game will broadcast on the Catamounts Sports Network and be heard locally on WWCU (90.5 FM). For those outside the area, audio can be obtained on the internet at www.catamountsports.com and www.wwcufm.com.
