Cullowhee, N.C. -
Western Carolina junior center David Berghoefer has been named Southern Conference Player of the Week, the league announced today. The 6-10 center from Cross Plains, Wis., averaged 20 points and 11 rebounds this past week for the Catamounts.
Berghoefer, who also averaged a double-double the previous week, scored 16 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds in Western's game at the College of Charleston. He scored 10 of WCU's final 20 points versus the Cougars, pulling the Catamounts to within three late in the contest. This past Monday, Berghoefer posted game highs in both points (24) and rebounds (11) in WCU's meeting with Appalachian State. He scored 15 first half points. While he only scored nine in the second half, four came on one possession thanks to four consecutive free throws. With WCU down eight with 1:39 left to play, his four free throws cut the Cats' deficit to four. In addition getting double-doubles in both games, Berghoefer shot 52 percent from the floor, adding four assists, three steals and a pair of blocked shots.
For the season, Berghoefer ranks fifth in the SoCon in scoring (14.9), eighth in overall rebounding (7.8), second in double-doubles (7), 11th in field goal percentage (.515), first in offensive rebounds (3.52) and 10th in defensive rebounds (4.30). Already having a solid season, averaging 13.6 points and 7.2 rebounds trough his first 18 games, Berghoefer has shown drastic improvement since missing the Davidson game with back spasms. Over the last five games, he has posted three of his seven double-doubles on the season, while averaging 19.8 points and 10.2 rebounds and adding nine assists, four blocked shots and four steals.
With 768 points in his career to date, Berghoefer is on pace to become the 34th Catamount to score 1,000 points before his time in Cullowhee is complete. He additionally needs just 42 more rebounds for 500 in his career. While reaching those milestones is impressive, it is even more so considering he only scored 90 points and had just 70 rebounds in his freshman season. In his first two years combined, he only had 27 assists, 15 blocked shots and 30 steals. This season alone, he already has 28 assists, 11 blocked shots and 35 steals.
Berghoefer will lead Western Carolina in its game at Elon this Saturday (Feb. 12). The last time WCU faced Elon, the Catamounts won 71-67 with Berghoefer scoring 22 points and pulling down a career-high 16 points. However, since then, Elon has won three-straight, including wins over the top two teams in the SoCon North Division (Chattanooga and UNC Greensboro). Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm at Elon's Alumni Gym. The game will be broadcast on WWCU (90.5 FM) and WRGC (680 AM). The broadcast can also be heard on the internet at www.catamountsports.com or www.wwcufm.com.
