To reach Western Carolina University from just about anywhere, one must have an atlas at the fingertips and the mentality of a trucker on a cross-country run. Cullowhee, N.C., a speck of a town of 3,600 people in which the college is located, is a 2½-hour drive from Atlanta and even longer expeditions over the Appalachian Mountains from Charlotte, N.C., and Richmond, Va.
