Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina junior guard Kyle Greathouse was named the Southern Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced today. The Lancaster, Ohio, native had two of his best career games in leading the Catamounts to wins over Chattanooga and UNC Greensboro, going 13-of-20 from 3-point range (65 percent) in the two games and averaging 23 points. He also had 13 assists with just three turnovers in the two games combined.

This is the first ever SoCon Player of the Week honor for Greathouse and the first by a Catamount since David Berghoefer accomplished the feat last season (Feb. 9, 2005).

First, in helping Western snap an eight-game losing streak to the Mocs on Saturday, Greathouse scored a then season-high 18 points by making 6-of-11 from 3-point range as the Catamounts set a school record by making 15 treys in the contest. He added eight assists, his most in a career versus a SoCon opponent.

Then, he scored a career-high 29 points in a win at UNC Greensboro on Monday. Greathouse missed his first two 3-pointers he attempted versus the Spartans, only to make his last seven over the rest of the game. Also, Greathouse made all six of his free throws, all coming inside the final minute. In the waning seconds, he would go on the seal the victory by getting a long rebound and layup with 13 seconds left. He added five assists, playing 39 minutes.

Thanks to Greathouse's play, Western, the preseason consensus pick to finish last in the SoCon North Division, is 3-1 in the league, giving WCU its best conference record to start a season since a 4-0 beginning in league play in 1994-95.

Western Carolina will return to action on Saturday (Jan. 21) to play at SoCon North Division leader Elon, who owns a 4-0 league mark. Tipoff in the Phoenix' Alumni Gym is set for 7:00 pm. If you can not be at the game, you can follow the action live on WWCU (90.5 FM in Cullowhee) or WRGC (680 AM in Sylva) as well as on the internet at www.wwcufm.com or www.wrgc.com.

Two days later (Monday, Jan. 23), the Catamounts will host the College of Charleston. That game with the Cougars is set to begin at 7:00 pm and the game will be televised on CSS TV (check local listings as well as your cable/satellite provider for availability in your area). At halftime of the WCU-CofC game, all the WCU student-athletes who had at least a 3.0 grade point average will be honored.
