Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina and the Catamount Sports Network are proud to announce an extended affiliate partnership with ESPN Radio 1310 & 970 AM out of Asheville to join the Catamount Sports Network (CSN) for the remainder of the 2012-13 men's basketball season. The station carried network football broadcasts this past fall.
ESPN Radio 1310 & 970 AM will begin game coverage beginning with Saturday afternoon's Southern Conference North Division showdown with preseason favorite, UNCG. Catamount Sports Network coverage on Saturday begins with a 1:30 pm air time. ESPN Radio joins three other stations broadcasting Catamount basketball including WWCU-FM, Power 90dot5 in Cullowhee; 540 AM WRGC in Sylva; and 920 AM WPTL in Canton.
"The partnership with ESPN Radio 1310 & 970 AM and the Catamount Sports Network was a big victory during our 2012 football season. Extending this association into this and next year's Catamount men's basketball season is another win for our department and our fan base," said Randy Eaton, WCU Athletics Director. "So many of our fans and alumni are located within the listenership of both 1310 AM and 970 AM - not to mention the longest running collegiate basketball tournament with the Southern Conference Championships being held in Asheville. Being affiliated across the Asheville Radio Group including segments with the Wise Guys daily talk show will greatly increase the exposure of Catamount Athletics across our region."
A part of the five-station Asheville Radio Group, ESPN Radio 1310 AM is based out of Asheville and simulcasts on WYSE 970 AM in Canton, N.C., expanding the Catamount Sports Network's footprint across Western North Carolina. The deal adds an over-the-air presence for CSN in Buncombe County, the largest concentration of WCU alumni in the state and also home of the 2013 SoCon Basketball Championships at the U.S. Cellular Center located downtown.
The Asheville Radio Group also includes the stations Mix 96.5 FM WOXL; 98.1 FM the RIVER and 105.9 The Mountain.
Western Carolina (6-9, 3-0 SoCon) returns to league play this Saturday afternoon by hosting UNCG in the Ramsey Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
