Cullowhee, N.C. -
The Western Carolina department of athletics has named junior center David Berghoefer (men's basketball) and freshman sprinter Raquel Ramseur (women's track & field) its Arby's/Catamount Student-Athletes of the Month for December.
Berghoefer (Cross Plains, Wisc.) averaged 13.3 points in the Catamounts' seven games during the month, which included a season-high 22 points in the Dec. 1 victory over Liberty. He connected on 10-of-18 shots versus the reigning Big South tournament champions, adding a season-high six steals in the winning effort. Berghoefer was also instrumental in Western Carolina's victory over instate rival, East Carolina. The junior tallied a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds helping the Catamounts record their first-ever victory over a Conference USA opponent, which was also just the ninth SoCon triumph in 52 chances versus C-USA since 1996-97.
In mid-December, Berghoefer turned in his second double-double performance of the month by scoring 18 and pulling down 11 boards in the loss at the Big Ten's Iowa Hawkeyes.
Ramseur (Charlotte, N.C.) was a part of a record-breaking day for the Western Carolina's indoor track & field teams at the non-team scored Appalachian Invitational held in early December. The first-year sprinter scorched the field with a Holmes Convocation Center record 55.73 in the 400-meter dash, eclipsing the previous record by more than a second. Ramseur was also a part of Western's 4x400-meter relay team that smashed the old course record by more than two seconds, crossing the stripe in 3:49.28. In all, Western captured nine first place finishes at the season-opening event.
She finished off the Catamounts' first meet on the indoor season by placing fourth in the 55-meter dash with an indoor personal best time of 7.17.
The Catamount men's basketball team travels to Chattanooga on Saturday (Jan. 8). Tip-off has been moved up to 7:00 pm at The McKenzie Arena, home of the 2005 Kyocera Southern Conference Basketball Championships. Both the men and women's track & field teams continues the indoor portion of their schedules on January 21-22 as they travel to Johnson City, Tenn., to compete in the NISWONGER Invitational at the Memorial Center.
