Catamount Men's Basketball Opens a Two-Game Home Stand on Thursday Night; Special Start Time of 6:00 pm

Jan. 6, 2009

Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina men's basketball team will host two games in Southern Conference play this week, beginning on Thursday night against UNC Greensboro in the Ramsey Center. Tip-off is set for a special start time of 6:00 pm.

Thursday's game is a WCU Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night with employees of Western earning free admission with a valid ID. Saturday is scheduled for a Catamount hoops double-header beginning at 4:00 pm with the women's game and 7:00 pm for the men's.

Western Carolina (6-5, 1-0 SoCon) is coming off an 11-point, 68-57, road win over Furman to claim victory in its conference opener last Saturday in Greenville, S.C. The win was WCU's first-ever at the Timmons Arena, a facility opened in 1998. The Catamounts have dropped three-straight overall against UNC Greensboro (1-10, 0-2 SoCon), which comes to town having lost nine-consecutive including two in league play.

Under head coach Larry Hunter, the Catamounts have won two of their three SoCon home openers, falling to the College of Charleston in Cullowhee by two, 86-84, last season.

Thursday night's featured player is junior transfer Kendall Russell. The Chicago, Ill., native will be available following the game for a post-game autograph session.

Saturday is scheduled for Canton/Clyde Day as WCU hosts a basketball double-header in the Ramsey Center. The Lady Catamounts, winners of three-straight, host SoCon newcomer, Samford, beginning at 4:00 pm. At 7:00 pm, the Catamount men host North Division rival, Elon.

One ticket is good for both games of the Catamount hoops double-header.

Fans can pick-up vouchers at participating Haywood County business locations and redeem them at the gate for a "Buy One, Get One Free." Vouchers are currently available in Haywood County at the following: Haywood Regional Health and Fitness Center; Ingle's grocery of Canton; BP gas station on New Clyde Highway; and Southside Discount on Pisgah Drive.

Men's basketball player - and Canton, N.C., native, junior Jake Robinson - will be the player featured on the game day programs on Saturday evening. Robinson, who currently ranks fifth on WCU's all-time 3-pointers made charts, will be available for post-game autographs.

Both WCU men's games will be broadcast by the Catamount Sports Network and can be heard locally on WWCU-FM, Power 90dot5 in Cullowhee, 680 AM WRGC in Sylva or 1590 AM WBHN in Bryson City. Fans can also follow the games online at www.WWCUFM.com or www.WRGC.com.
