NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Wes Burtner scored 29 of his 32 points in the second
half as Belmont beat Western Carolina 85-74 on Saturday night.
Belmont (5-4) had a 14-point cushion going into halftime, thanks in part to
an 11-1 run capped by B.J. Proffitt's 3-pointer near the buzzer.
But Western Carolina (2-7) cut the Bruins' lead to five in the second half,
after a pair of free throws by Corey Wells at 13:46. The two teams traded shots
in the early minutes of the half, allowing the Catamounts to get within five
points twice more before Belmont began pulling away.
The Bruins' biggest lead came with 42 seconds left on a pair of free throws
by Burtner, making the score 82-66.
Adding to Burtner's game-high 32 points for Belmont were Adam Sonn with 16,
and Proffitt and Steve Drabyn with 10 points each.
Corey Wells led Catamounts' scoring with 19. Casey Rogers followed with 14,
while Willie Freeman added 13 more.
