Catamount Comeback Too Late Against N.C.-Asheville, 79-69

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Senior guard Brett Carey scored 20 points to lead N.C.-Asheville to a 79-69 win against rival Western Carolina on Monday night.

Carey, who transferred from Western Carolina after his sophomore year, scored 15 first-half points and helped the Bulldogs (4-2) to a 38-19 halftime lead.

UNC-A held the visiting Catamounts to 29-percent shooting in the half and forced 18 turnovers for the game.

Sophomore guard Andre Smith scored a season-high 17 points and had six assists. Colin Shaw added 10 points to the Bulldogs' effort.

Western Carolina (1-6) was led by Corey Wells, who netted 17 points. Cory Largent scored 16 and Kori Hatcher added 10.

The Bulldogs jumped to a 14-2 lead after the first five minutes and continued to build the lead throughout the first half. UNC-A increased its lead to 26 points early in the second half on a 3-pointer from Brandon Carter.

Western Carolina rallied, closing to within 69-60 at the 1:11 mark. But the Bulldogs hit four consecutive free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
