Western Carolina Head Coach Larry Hunter
On the play of Trey Sumler down the stretch:
"We wanted to keep it in Trey's hands, obviously. He hit the big 3-pointer and had a basket before that to give us the lead. He makes pretty good decisions with the ball. We like our chances with him. He came up big, but I thought our defense during the last four or five minutes was huge. They had done a good job of opening up the lead and put themselves in good position down the stretch. I thought we had some big defensive stops during that stretch as well."
On the tough nature of tonight's game:
"That's Southern Conference basketball. Coach (Mike) Young is such a terrific coach. He has a lot of young guys, but they have really bought into their system and are consistently getting better. We knew it would be a battle and a competitive battle. It's one of those games where sometimes it's not pretty if you like up and down the court and a lot of scoring, but it's good basketball. I thought they forced us into some turnovers and we were a little careless on our end. It hurt our offense even though we shot 50-percent during the second half."
On battling until the end of the game:
"We haven't done that consistently, especially at home. We've lost some close ones and finally it was our turn to win one of those."
On getting consecutive wins:
"I like what our team's doing right now. I think we really rededicated ourselves to good team defense. It's the third time in a row we've held a team under 41 percent shooting. Our rebounding is getting better and it's giving us a chance to win and our offense is starting to come along. We're starting to peak a little bit. We're starting to get a little confidence. When you win, you start to get confidence. Our guys have hung in there. I really respect our guys with how our guys have hung in there with where our record was."
"We're in the middle of a 10 day, five game stretch so we have two more (games) this week after playing three last week. We have to regroup, go on the road where we've played pretty well."
