BOONE, N.C.(AP) - Josh Shehan and Donald Payne combined for 40 points and 23 rebounds as Appalachian State beat Western Carolina 87-75 on Saturday.

Shehan hit 9 of 13 shots on his way to a career-high 23 points. He added 10 rebounds. Payne scored 17 points and had 13 rebounds for the Mountaineers (5-14, 2-4 Southern Conference).

The Mountaineers jumped to a 10-point lead midway through the first half and pushed ahead 33-13 on a three-point play from junior guard Jonathan Butler with 5:36 to play in the half.

The Catamounts closed to within 80-73 on a dunk from Rans Brempong, but could get no closer.

Appalachian State held a 46-27 edge on the glass and hit 32 of 44 free throws in the game. Western Carolina (2-17, 0-6) hit 11 of 19 free throws.

Western Carolina was led by Cory Largent, who finished with 16 points and five rebounds. Largent hit 5 of 6 3-point attempts. Casey Rogers added 15 points and six assists.
