BOONE, N.C. (AP) - Kevin Martin scored 22 points as Western Carolina beat Appalachian State 79-71 on Monday.

Western Carolina (9-7, 3-2 Southern Conference) jumped to an 11-1 lead and withstood several runs from the Mountaineers (5-10, 1-4). Appalachian State cut the deficit to four points several times in the second half, but could not get closer.

The Catamounts led 36-31 at halftime and pushed the lead to 11 with a spurt to open the second half. Western Carolina shot 50.9 percent while holding the Mountaineers to 37.7 percent.

Western Carolina hit 21 of 24 free throws and outrebounded the Mountaineers 42-35.

Willie Freeman added 12 points for the Catamounts. Cory Largent had 11 points and eight rebounds, while Kelvin Wylie had 10 points and nine boards.

Appalachian State was led by Donald Payne, who had 14 points and seven rebounds. Jonathan Butler added 12 points and five assists.
