The WCU men's basketball team opened up the 2012-13 season officially with its first practice of the season in the Ramsey Center, Friday evening.

Career Notes: Became 40th Catamount to eclipse the 1,000 point mark doing so against No. 13 Illinois (12/04) ... Currently ranked 16th with 1,439 career points ... Enters 2013-14 ranked in the top-ten of six Western Carolina all-time records ... Fifth with a 82.3 free throw percentage ... Eighth with 146 steals and 39.2 3-point field goal percentage ... Tied for ninth with 155 threes made and 348 made free throws ... Tenth with 358 career assists ... Turned in 77 career double figure scoring games ... Led the team in scoring 35 times ... Recorded his first career double-double with 16 points and a career-high 10 rebounds in the road win over Presbyterian (11/17) ... 2010-11 (Redshirt Freshman): Played in all 33 games including 23 starts with 21-consecutive appearances in the starting lineup to conclude the season ... Averaged 31.3 minutes of playing time per game ... Ranked second on the team - and 22nd in the Southern Conference - with an 11.5 points per game average, recording 20 double-digit scoring outings ... Averaged 13.4 points per game against SoCon foes, tied for 16th in the league ... Selected as the "Mr. Hustle Spirit Award" winner by the coaching staff ... Boarded a career-high eight three times, finishing with a 4.0 rebound per game average ... Ranked third in the SoCon with a 43.7 3-point field goal percentage and was ninth with a 79.4 free throw seasonal free throw percentage ... Named Southern Conference Freshman of the Year by both the league's head coaches and voting members of the media and was named to the SoCon's All-Freshman team ... He is the second Catamount in the past three years to garner the conference's top rookie honor, joining Harouna Mutombo who earned the award in 2009 ... Saw his first collegiate action at Clemson in the 2010-11 season opener, entering the game at the 13:47 mark of the first half ... Connected on his first collegiate field goal at the 13:12 mark - a 3-pointer just 35 seconds into his college career - leading the Catamounts with a career-high 16 points on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting night in the opener ... Made his first collegiate start on Dec. 4 at Chattanooga, finishing with eight points ... Prior to Western: Walked on to the Western Carolina men's basketball team following a prep career at Nash Central High School in Rocky Mount, N.C. ... An athletic wing who averaged 23.6 points per outing as a senior for the Bulldogs ... Was selected as the NEW-6 Conference's Boys Co-Player of the Year, sharing the award with Wilson Fike's Jeremy Atkinson ... Sumler helped the Bulldogs reach the Round of 16 of the Class 3-A State Playoffs, where NCHS was edged in the final minute by defending state champion Kinston ... Sumler collected 36 points in that outing ... Sumler scored a career-best 40 points against Bunn ... For his career, he tallied 1,921 points and was a first-team All-Conference pick four times ...
