Knoxville, Tenn. - A pair of two-run innings for Tennessee allowed the Volunteers to build a five-run lead over Western Carolina on Friday evening en route to a 6-3 victory over the Catamounts in a fall scrimmage at Nelson Stadium.

WCU senior Ross Heffley headlined the Catamount offensive with two of the squad's eight hits, finishing 2-for-3 with a two-out double to right-center in the fourth inning.

"Today was very, very insightful and very helpful for us in all aspects of the game," said Catamount head coach Bobby Moranda. "We were able to throw every pitcher on roster and bat all of our hitters and that allowed us to experiment a little. Overall, I think we did some things well but also found areas in which we need to see improvement that seeing another jersey in a scrimmage format helped point out."

Moranda added, "Today was a step in right direction and learned a lot about our club while facing well-coached team like Tennessee. Now, we've got to get back to work the remainder of our fall - we've still got a lot of improvement that can be made as we look forward to our season in the spring."

During the nine-inning portion of the scrimmage, 10 different Catamount pitchers took the mound with junior Preston Hatcher the only hurler to record more than an inning of work. Hatcher tossed an inning and a third of shutout, hitless relief work with a strikeout. Sophomore Jordan Smith got the start allowing one run on a hit with a hit batsman and a strikeout.

Senior Cameron Dullnig was saddled with the unofficial loss after surrendering two runs on one hit with a pair of walks while managing a staff-high two strikeouts.

Tennessee got on the board first in the home half of the first inning, capitalizing on aggressive base running. Will Maddox opened the frame with a leadoff single to right field before moving to second two batters later when Chris Fritts was plunked by WCU starter Smith. Maddox then took third on a medium-depth fly ball to center and scored on a double-steal including a delayed steal of home while the Catamount defense tried to nail Fritts at second base.

In the top of the second, the Catamounts answered with a run to tie the game at one. Sophomore Cody Jones singled down the third base line and promptly stole second base. Jones took third base as classmate Dykota Spiess flew out to left field ahead of sophomore Aaron Attaway who laced an RBI single to right center.

The Volunteers seized the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth inning with a pair of runs on just one hit, taking advantage of a pair of walks and a hit batsman before a two-RBI single by Zach Luther. Tennessee tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth before pushing across two in the home half of the seventh inning to take a 6-1 lead.

The Catamounts got back within shouting distance with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the eighth inning. Freshman Bradley Strong singled to short and moved to second as Heffley singled to left. With two aboard, both runners advanced on a wild pitch and were plated as Jones reached on a fielding error by the Vols shortstop. The rally was cut short, though, as Jones was caught stealing to end the frame.

Spiess led off the ninth with a triple for the Catamounts, but UT's Nick Williams retired the final three batters, including two big strikeouts to end the contest and secure the save.

Western Carolina will continue fall practice through the end of October before entering winter workouts ahead of the 2012 season that begins in February.
