Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina head baseball coach Bobby Moranda has named Greg Parsons as the inaugural president of the newly-formed baseball booster organization, the "1002 Club." Plans also progress for the annual Alumni & Friends weekend scheduled around WCU's Family Weekend on Oct. 23-25.

"The '1002 Club' is a very important booster organization that will be dedicated to the continued success of the Catamount baseball program. I am very excited about having someone with the ties and the passion to lead this group in Greg Parsons," said Moranda, who is entering his third season at the helm. "I am looking forward to this year's alumni weekend to fully kickoff the 1002 Club and want to personally welcome all baseball alumni and friends of our baseball program to the golf tournament and weekend of activities."

Parsons, a graduate of Miami University in Ohio, has 15 years of experience as the Senior Vice President at Blockbuster Entertainment. He also has close ties with longtime WCU athletics and Catamount baseball supporter, Larry Stanberry. Parsons and his wife of 24 years, Ann, have two children and three grandchildren.

The "1002" mission statement and rallying cry for Catamount Baseball players and fans alike started during the Keith LeClair era and represents the mileage from Cullowhee to Omaha, Neb., home of the College World Series. Contributions to the "1002 Club" will go 100% into the WCU baseball program's scholarship fund and will help complete the mission of competing in Omaha.

The WCU baseball team is amidst its annual fall practice, working around the rain showers during what has been an abnormally wet end to summer, beginning of fall. The squad will conclude its drills with its traditional fall World Series, a set of intra-squad scrimmages that will culminate on baseball Alumni Weekend, Oct. 23-25.

Alumni Weekend festivities will begin on Friday, Oct. 23, with a four-person scramble golf tournament at the exclusive Old Edwards Club (www.OldEdwardsClub.com) in Highlands Cove beginning at 1:00 pm. The Tom Jackson sculpted course underwent extensive renovations in the first quarter of 2009 to become an architectural marvel that sits atop the Eastern Continental Divide in the mountains of Western North Carolina.

Cost of playing golf on Friday is $75, and will include a greens fees and meal at the course. Those wishing to participate in the alumni weekend golf tournament must verify commitment or submit payment to WCU alum and assistant coach, Alan Beck, no later than October 19. Spaces are limited and are filling up fast. Among those already committed to attending are former Catamount skippers, Bill Haywood and Todd Raleigh (see full list below of those planning on attending).

The party will switch to O'Malley's Pub and Grill in Sylva on Friday evening following the 18 holes of golf.

On Saturday, the alumni weekend continues with a morning team intra-squad scrimmage, which will conclude with a special alum batting practice round on the field. The afternoon continues with a baseball-specific tailgate prior to WCU's home football game against the Wofford Terriers, with kickoff at 4:00 pm.

For more information on the "1002 Club," WCU Baseball Alumni and Friends Weekend or to reserve your spot in the golf tournament, please contact Alan Beck at (828) 227-2510 or via E-mail at abeck@email.wcu.edu.
