Cullowhee, N.C. -
The Western Carolina Catamount baseball team and second-year head coach Bobby Moranda will begin preparations for the 2009 season this weekend with the opening of fall practice. Also, the baseball staff has announced an Alumni Golf Outing scheduled for Hall of Fame Weekend (Oct. 31-Nov. 2) as former Catamount pitcher, Jason Beverlin, is being inducted this year.
The NCAA regulates a period of 45 days in which the team can have up to 30 practice dates during the off-season. Moranda and staff, which have been working through individual work-outs, and the players -- who have spent time working with WCU Strength & Conditioning Coordinator, Brad Ohrt -- will take to the field together Saturday for the first time since last season.
The opening weekend is slated to include the first of several intra-squad scrimmage situations.
As a part of fall practice, the Catamounts will be on display twice outside of Cullowhee and the friendly confines of Childress Field/Hennon Stadium. On Saturday, Oct. 11, Western will host a youth clinic at Tuscola High in Waynesville, with a similar event to be held at Franklin High the following weekend (Oct. 18). The outing will include general instruction for youth, followed by a homerun derby among the Catamount sluggers. Festivities both days will culminate with an intra-squad scrimmage.
Western returns two All-Southern Conference performers off of last year's squad which finished 29-28 overall. Senior right-hander Mike Tavernier and junior second baseman Nick Liles lead a returning cast of 20 with an influx of 11 newcomers.
WCU's 2009 schedule is slated to be released in the coming days.
