June 19, 2000

Durham, N.C. - By defeating No. 1-ranked Stanford on Brad Cresse's run-scoring single in the bottom of the ninth inning, Louisiana State won its fifth national championship and finished the 2000 season ranked No. 1 in Baseball America's Top 25 rankings.

The Tigers have also won national championships in 1991, '93, '96 and '97. Their five No. 1 finishes in the BA poll are the most since the rankings began in 1981. Stanford fell to No. 2, while Florida State, which finished tied for third in Omaha, ranks third.

South Carolina, which did not reach the College World Series but had the best regular season of any team in the nation, ranks No. 4 in the final poll, followed by Southern California. Georgia Tech--another non-CWS team--follows at No. 6. The rest of the CWS field included No. 7 Clemson, No. 9 Louisiana-Lafayette (its highest final ranking ever), No. 10 Texas, and No. 18 San Jose State.

Rankings are through the end of the 2000 season and determined by the staff of Baseball America. Records indicated do not include tie games.
