WCU's Strausbaugh and Beck Win Summer Baseball Titles

Aug. 14, 2006

Cullowhee, N.C. - Two members of the 2006 Western Carolina baseball program claimed championships this summer. Rising junior Steven Strausbaugh helped the Yarmouth-Denis (Y-D) Red Sox win the Cape Cod Baseball League title, while former assistant coach Alan Beck, who was the head coach of the Thomasville HiToms, led his team to the Coastal Plain League title. Beck was assisted this summer by his former Catamount teammate Ryan McCurry, who is set to return to Cullowhee this season as a graduate assistant coach.

First, Strausbaugh went 1-for-4 with two runs scored in the Eastern Division final as Y-D defeated Brewster in a three-game series. The Red Sox, who owned the best regular-season record in the CCBL, dropped the first game of the championship series to Wareham, 4-2. Y-D bounced back to claim a 5-4 victory on Aug. 12 to force a winner-take-all contest on Aug. 13, a game the Red Sox would win 5-1. Strausbaugh was 1-for-3 with a hit by pitch in the championship final.

Beck led Thomasville to a franchise record 33 wins and its first ever CPL title. The HiToms, who were seeded sixth, upset Edenton 8-0 in the first round of the playoffs, then fell 9-2 to Peninsula. Thomasville worked its way out of the loser's bracket with a 10-0 decision over Wilson Saturday night and a 14-8 victory over top-seeded Fayetteville Sunday afternoon to force a rematch with Peninsula in the final that same day. In title game, Beck led his squad to a 6-1 victory to win the CPL title.
