Cullowhee, N.C. -
Western Carolina first baseman Jared Greenwood, who just completed his junior season with the Catamount baseball team, has been named to the Atlantic Region first team by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA). Greenwood and his former Franklin High teammate Gary Morris, a second team all-region selection from Elon, were the only two players from the Southern Conference to be honored.
Greenwood currently ranks sixth in the NCAA in home runs (0.36/game) and 17th in slugging percentage (.731). He additionally was the SoCon home run champion with 21, giving the Cats the league home run leader for the fourth consecutive year and a total of 15 times over the previous 18. Greenwood became just the 11th Catamount and first since Donovan Minero in 2002 to win the team triple crown, leading WCU in batting average (.338), home runs (21) and RBI (63). In addition to leading the SoCon in home runs, Greenwood led the league in total bases (160), while ranking fourth in RBI (62), second in slugging percentage (.731), fourth in doubles (21), fifth in walks (38), ninth in on-base percentage (.451) and 16th in batting average (.338).
His SoCon-leading 21 home runs tied for sixth on the SoCon single-season list and tied for fifth on the WCU single-season list. He was the first SoCon player to hit at least 20 homers in a season since former Catamount Steve Harris tied the league record with 26 in 1999, is just the 12th player in SoCon history to reach the 20-home run milestone and is the eighth in WCU history to accomplish the feat.
Greenwood added 21 doubles to rank fourth on the WCU single-season top 10 list, while ranking third on the WCU single-season list by being hit by 12 pitches this season.
Greenwood will now be eligible for All-American honors by the ABCA. He is the 26th Catamount to be named to the ABCA All-Atlantic Region team and this marks the 14th time a Catamount has earned first team region honors by the organization. Last season, Alan Beck, who was the 2003 SoCon Player of the Year, earned second team honors, while Donovan Minero, who was the 2002 SoCon Player of the Year, was a first team All-Atlantic Region pick in 2001, which led to him earning third team All-America honors. Western Carolina has had at least one player named to the ABCA All-Atlantic Region team in 19 of the last 28 years.
