Cullowhee, N.C. -
Western Carolina freshman Chris Masters, who is playing summer league baseball with the New Market (Va.) Rebels, was named the Valley League Pitcher of the Week, announced today by the league office.
Masters went 1-0 last week with a 1.50 ERA in two starts helping New Market go 3-2 overall. The Marietta, Ga., native struck out a league-leading 22 batters in 12 innings pitched, while scattering 10 hits, only one for extra bases, and walking just three. The rising sophomore held opponents to a .222 batting average on the week.
Last season at Western, Masters was used both as a mid-week starter, as well as a vital part of the Catamount bullpen. His 31 appearances were second on the team only to Greg Holland, who was drafted and signed by the Kansas City Royals. The hard-throwing, left-hander posted a 3-2 record in his rookie campaign with a 3.31 ERA, striking out 62 in 54.1 innings pitched while limiting opponents to a .243 batting average.
The Valley League features 11 teams, all of which are located in the Shenandoah Valley of western Virginia, playing a 44-game schedule. This is the 15th season for the wooden bat league.
