17 Catamounts Playing Summer League Baseball

June 3, 2014

Cullowhee, N.C. - A combined 17 players from Western Carolina's 2014 Southern Conference back-to-back regular season championship team are headed to 12 different summer league teams across the nation, many having already begun play. A total of 11 Catamounts will be playing in southeastern-based leagues with the rosters of three summer league teams featuring two-or-more WCU players.

All told, WCU sent four players to the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League, and two apiece to the Valley, Coastal Plain, Perfect Game Collegiate and Carolina-Virginia Leagues. Catamounts will also suit up this summer in the Cape Cod, Northwoods, Great Lakes, California, and Southern Collegiate Leagues.

A combined eight Catamounts will team together this summer including four playing for the Alexandria (Va.) Aces in the Ripken League - infielder J.D. Long, catcher Danny Bermudez, and pitchers Korey Anderson and Nate Williams. Classmates in pitcher B.J. Nobles and infielder Dylan Prevatte will both wear the uniform of the Newark (N.Y.) Pilots, while pitchers Dillon Bray and Alex Barr both are on staff with the North Carolina Piedmont-based, Kernersville Bulldogs, of the Carolina-Virginia Collegiate League.

Two Catamounts will stay in-state in the southeastern-based Coastal Plain League. Outfielder Dale Urquhart Jr., will suit up for the Thomasville Hi-Toms while Jonathan Waszak will pitch close to home with the Wilson Tobs. WCU will again be represented across the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia in the Valley League as infielder Reece Strong will play for the Aldie Senators and Jason Smith with the New Market Rebels.

Western Carolina will send one player to the prestigious Cape Cod League this summer with LHP Taylor Durand earning a temporary contract to start the summer in the northeastern United States.

Third team All-America selection, second baseman Bradley Strong, returned to St. Cloud, Minn., to again play for the Rox. Last summer, Strong, a native of Richlands, Va., hit .309 with two doubles and a triple, collecting nine RBI after joining the team mid-season after opening the summer in the Cape Cod League.

After playing on the Crystal Coast in Morehead City, N.C., last summer, rising senior Jacob Hoyle will play on the West Coast for the San Luis Obispo Blues this summer in the California Collegiate League. WCU had four players compete for SLO a summer ago - three earning midseason All-Star status in Aaron Attaway, Cody Jones and Jordan Smith.

Two players playing close to their respective hometowns include redshirt Pierce Suttles with the Lake Norman Copperheads - just minutes from his hometown of Cornelius, N.C., while Fredricktown, Ohio, product Matt Smith is playing for the Licking County Settlers of the Great Lakes League in Newark, Ohio, less than an hour from home.
