Chapel Hill, N.C. - Remnants of Tropical Depression Barry, which reeked havoc on both the Columbia and Myrtle Beach NCAA Baseball Regionals on Saturday, has pushed back the start of today's elimination game between third-seeded Western Carolina and second-seeded East Carolina. Only one of the scheduled two games will be played today, with the WCU and ECU elimination match-up slated to start at 7:00 pm at UNC's Boshamer Stadium.
Originally scheduled for a 1:00 pm start, the first pitch was delayed until 2:00 pm before additional rain pulled through the area prompting the extended delay.
Light rain showers in the Triangle on Saturday evening did not interfere with the thrilling, 11-10, come-from-behind victory by top-seeded North Carolina over the Pirates which propelled the Tar Heels through the winner's bracket and relegated ECU into today's meeting with Western.
Although the infield was covered by a tarp, rain showers overnight and through the early morning prompted officials to make the change in the schedule. The WCU-ECU match-up was the first of two scheduled games in the Chapel Hill Regional with the winner of the first game advancing to face North Carolina, needing to defeat the Tar Heels twice to advance to the Super Regional next weekend.
The 16th all-time meeting between Western and ECU will be broadcast by the Catamount Sports Network and can be heard locally on WWCU-FM, Power 90dot5 in Cullowhee or online at www.WWCUFM.com. Air time is scheduled to be at 6:45 pm on Sunday evening.
