22 Catamounts Playing Summer League Baseball

May 29, 2013

Cullowhee, N.C. - A combined 22 players from Western Carolina's 2013 Southern Conference regular season championship team are headed to various summer league teams across the nation, many having already begun play. A total of 16 Catamounts will be playing in southeastern leagues with the rosters of six summer league teams featuring two-or-more WCU players.

All told, WCU will send seven players to the Valley League, four to the Coastal Plain League, three apiece to the California Collegiate and Carolina-Virginia Collegiate Leagues, with two going to the prestigious Cape Cod League and Southern Collegiate and one in the mid-west's Northwoods League.

Western Carolina is sending a total of seven players to the Valley Baseball League. Four Catamounts are teamed together with the Waynesboro (Va.) Generals including outfielder Dale Urquhart Jr., RHP Taylor Sandefur, LHP Bryce Danielson and freshman RHP Thomas Young. Sandefur is making his second stint with the squad after earning the Valley League's Cy Young Award for most outstanding pitcher following his 2010 freshman season.

A trio of WCU players will head to the Winchester (Va.) Royals, which finished as the runner-up in last year's Valley League. Position players J.D. Long and Luke Gragg will be joined by Southern Conference All-Freshman team selection, RHP Jonathan Waszak, on the squad.

A pair of Catamounts will team with the Coastal Plain League's Forest City Owls in RHP Colton Davis and battery-mate, catcher Danny Bermudez. Outfielder Dykota Spiess is in the CPL with the Thomasville Hi-Toms while sophomore infielder Jacob Hoyle is playing along the Crystal Coast with the Morehead City Marlins.

Also, former undergraduate assistant coach Kyle Deese is coaching in Thomasville with volunteer assistant Brandon Johnson coaching with the Asheboro Copperheads in the CPL.

Three WCU baseball players will travel to the California Collegiate League to play with the San Luis Obispo Blues. Position players Aaron Attaway and Cody Jones are joined by RHP Tyler Powell on the Blues' roster. According to available research, it is the first time WCU has sent players to the west coast league.

A bit closer to home, both RHP Danny Schneider and LHP William Frazier will play for the Lake Norman Copperheads of the Southern Collegiate League with position players Jason Smith and Reece Strong, as well as LHP Alex Barr all teaming with the Kernersville Bulldogs of the Carolina-Virginia Collegiate League.

Western Carolina is sending two players to the prestigious Cape Cod League, which opens play on June 12. Rising juniors in infielder Bradley Strong and RHP Jeremy Null will team with the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. Strong was a part of winning a Prospect League championship with the West Virginia Miners a summer ago. Rising senior RHP Jordan Smith could be a late addition to a Cape squad list after pitching last summer with the Cotuit (Mass.) Kettleers.

Rounding out WCU's summer league assignments is catcher Adam Martin who is headed to the St. Cloud (Minn.) Rox of the Northwoods League.
