Cullowhee, N.C. - The sixteen regional sites for the 2007 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship were announced today by the NCAA Baseball Committee. That same group is scheduled to announce the remainder of the 64-team field in a live, half-hour program live on ESPN at 12:30 pm Monday afternoon.
Each regional field will feature four teams, playing a double-elimination format with all 16 regionals scheduled to be conducted from Friday, June 1, to Monday, June 4.
Southern Conference regular-season co-champion, Western Carolina, will await word on a possible at-large bid into the post-season field. The only 40-win team from the SoCon, Western won three games against teams currently among the top 25 in RPI. According to RPI numbers from WarrenNolan.com, the Catamounts entered Sunday ranked 38th, while BoydsWorld.com had WCU 42nd in RPI and 47th overall in Iterative Strength Ratings, which factors in record, RPI and updated strength of schedule.
In the most recent unofficial regional projections by Mark Etheridge and the staff of SEBaseball.com, the Catamounts are predicted to be a No. 3 in the regional hosted by Coastal Carolina in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Joining WCU in the field of 64 according to the website are SoCon tournament champion, Wofford, and the College of Charleston (39-19) giving the SoCon a possible three teams.
