Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina sophomore third baseman Jonathan Greene was named Southern Conference Baseball Player of the Week, the league announced today. Also, Greene was named one of Collegiate Baseball/"Louisville Slugger's" National Players of the Week. This is the first weekly honor Greene has earned, the ninth time a Catamount baseball has been recognized by the SoCon this season and the third national honor. Greene, who batted .722 with five home runs in four games last week, will lead the Catamounts in the first round of the 2006 Southern Conference Baseball Championship. WCU will face Furman on Wednesday (May 24) at 10:00 am.
Greene (Boone, N.C./Watauga HS) was 13-for-18 at the plate and hit at least one home run in each of his four games, as well as having at least three hits in each contest. Greene added nine RBI and seven runs scored with two doubles and posted a slugging percentage of 1.667. And for good measure, he was perfect in 12 chances in the field with six put outs and six assists.
At East Tennessee State, he was 3-for-4 with a home run and a double. In the first Furman game, he went 4-for-5 with a two-run home run. On Saturday, WCU and Furman played a doubleheader. Greene was 6-for-9 in the two games with three home runs. In the first game of the DH, he was 3-for-4 with a double and a home run. In game two, he was 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI. Each of his two home runs in game two tied the contest, although WCU would eventually fall to the Paladins.
Greene saw his batting average jump from .299 to .333 after his impressive week. For the year, he now has 14 home runs and 54 RBI. Although he has made 22 errors at third, which is not his natural position, he has only made one error in his last 12 games (36 chances). Also, over his last 12 games, his batting average has soared from .288 to .333 with seven HR and 20 RBI over the span.
Other Catamounts to be honored by the SoCon this season include Steven Strausbaugh (TIAA-CREF Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week on Feb. 22 and the Southern Conference Player of the Week on Mar. 20); Tyler Sexton (SoCon Pitcher of the Week on Mar. 13); Trey McDaniel (SoCon Player of the Week on Mar. 27); Blake Murphy (SoCon Player of the Month for March) and Greg Holland (SoCon Pitcher of the Week on May 8, TIAA-CREF SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week on May 10 and May 17).
The same week McDaniel was tabbed SoCon Player of the Week, he was named National Hitter of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, while he and Murphy were named National Players of the Week by Collegiate Baseball/"Louisville Slugger."
