Cullowhee, N.C. - The two winningest teams in Southern Conference Baseball Tournament history, Western Carolina with 57 victories and The Citadel with 47 victories, will meet in the first round of this year's championship. The Catamounts, who swept Wofford this past weekend to move into the third seed, and Bulldogs, who took 2-of-3 from Georgia Southern to earn the sixth seed, will play Wednesday night (May 25) at approximately 7:30 pm at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in Charleston, S.C.
Western (32-12 overall; 18-12 in the SoCon) and The Citadel (23-32; 14-16 SoCon) played for the SoCon Tournament title last season with the Bulldogs coming out of the loser's bracket to defeat the Catamounts twice to claim the championship. With those two wins, the schools have now each won seven games against the other at the annual event. That victory gave The Citadel its seventh tournament title and 19th overall league championship. The previous year, Western Carolina won both the SoCon regular season and tournament titles giving WCU 19 overall league championships, 10 regular season and nine in the tournament. Western and/or The Citadel have played for the SoCon tournament title in 19 of the 21 tournaments since 1984. The Cats have played for the SoCon tourney title 14 times, while the Bulldogs have played for it 10 times.
The Catamounts were picked to place sixth in the SoCon by both the league's coaches and media in the preseason. However, Western won eight of its last nine conference games to move from seventh to third in a four week span. The Cats' lone blemish over the span was a 6-5 loss at UNC Greensboro, which kept Western a half game out of placing second. (Western finished 18-12 for a .600 winning percentage while Georgia Southern was 18-11 for a .621 winning percentage.)
