Western Carolina sophomore pitcher Brian McCullen has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week for games played May 11-16. Also honored by the league were Davidson's Jay Heafner and Georgia Southern's James Payne as the conference's Co-Players of the Week.
McCullen, a 6-1, 210-pound product from Goldsboro, N.C., went 2-0 on the mound, helping the Catamounts to a 4-1 record for the week, including a weekend sweep over Wofford. McCullen was the starter against UNC Asheville on Wednesday and held the Bulldogs to four hits and one run over six innings as Western posted a 9-1 win. In a relief appearance against Wofford on Saturday, McCullen went five innings and allowed just two hits while tying a career high with five strikeouts. For the week, McCullen was 2-0 with a 0.82 earned run average in 11.0 innings worked and held opponents to a .154 batting average.
Western Carolina will play its final home game of the 2004 season on Wednesday (May 19) when the Cats host Gardner-Webb, who has won 11 straight, at 7 pm.
