Greensboro, N.C. - Western Carolina junior Tyler Sexton was today named the Southern Conference TIAA-CREF Student-Athlete of the Week, capping a very eventful week for the left-handed pitcher.
Earlier in the week, Sexton was tabbed the SoCon's Baseball Pitcher of the Week after a complete-game shutout victory over Appalachian State, and on Thursday, was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III.
The honor is the second of the season for Sexton, who was tabbed student-athlete of the week back on April 19. He joins classmate Greg Holland as two Catamount baseball honorees this spring. Also honored earlier this year for Western were cross country junior Kerrie Savery (Sept. 13) and women's basketball sophomore Lauren Powell, who was recognized three times this season (Dec. 7, Jan. 24, & Feb. 7).
Sexton (7-2) worked nine solid innings for the Catamounts, walking one and striking out five while holding the Mountaineers to just five base hits - all of which were singles - in last Friday's complete game shutout as Western Carolina beat Appalachian State, 6-0, as a part of its sixth-straight SoCon series victory. The High Point, N.C., native did not allow an ASU base runner passed second base and limited the Mountaineer bats to a .167 batting average.
In the classroom, the transfer from Campbell University boasts a 3.98 grade point average while majoring in Sport Management with a minor in Coaching.
