White Homers in Western Carolina's 3-1 Road Loss at Wake Forest
Western Carolina was limited to just four base hits by Wake Forest's pitching staff as the Demon Deacons edged the Catamounts, 3-1, Tuesday night in midweek nonconference action on a cold evening at Gene Hooks Field.

Catamount Diamond Notes:
- Western Carolina went 2-2 last week, falling at nationally-ranked Clemson 11-3, in the back-end of a midweek nonconference home-and-home before going 2-1 at Samford in Southern Conference play ... WCU suffered a 10-4 loss in Friday's series opener before winning the final two games, 10-7 and 7-1, to take the conference series;

- WCU's wins in Birmingham were just the second and third all-time for the Catamounts, who entered the series 1-5 against the Bulldogs on the road in the all-time series ... WCU now leads its series vs. Samford, 11-9, with a 3-6 record in games played at Joe Lee Griffin Field;

- With the two wins last weekend over Samford, the Catamounts have now won 29 of their last 35 regular season Southern Conference games ... The losses have come to Furman (3), Elon (1), Appalachian State (1) and Samford (1);

- WCU has won back-to-back SoCon series - and has claimed at least two wins in the trio of weekend against league foes in 12 of the last 13 conference series;

- With the two victories last week, WCU seventh-year head coach Bobby Moranda has 223 career victories to move into sole possession of fourth-place all-time in program history, by-passing long-time head coach Bill Haywood who recorded a 215-161-2 record in Cullowhee ... With 113 career SoCon wins, Moranda ranks second in WCU history behind Todd Raleigh who won 132 SoCon games at the head of the Catamount program;



- Junior Jacob Hoyle led the Catamounts last week with a .400 batting average (6-for-15) with two home runs to take the Southern Conference lead ... Senior Luke Gragg had four hits against Samford including three doubles ... Freshman Matt Smith also had four hits (4-for-9) with four singles against the Bulldogs;

- Seniors Jordan Smith and T.J. Fussell earned wins for the Catamounts last week, both striking out six apiece ... Smith limited Samford to a .179 batting average against, allowing just five singles and one unearned run in eight innings to earn his team-leading seventh victory;

- Senior Adam Martin enters the week with the team's longest active reached base safely streak at 13 games ... Cody Jones has the team's longest streak at 23 games while Danny Bermudez had a 20-game streak earlier this season;

- Adding to his career-record with his 55th career start, senior Jordan Smith earned his 24th career win to move into a tie for sixth place in program history, matching Phillip Grundy (24, 1991-93) ... Smith moved into third place in program history with 347.0 career innings pitched, just 16 innings shy of the school record ... Smith is just the fourth different Catamount hurler to eclipse 300 career innings on the mound ... Smith also advanced to fourth on the career strikeouts ledger, currently with 264 career Ks;

- Smith currently ranks first among active Southern Conference members in career wins (24) and is first in games started (55), which also ranks him tied for 10th in the SoCon record books;

- Junior RHP Jeremy Null remains seventh in WCU's career record books with 246 career Ks, breaking the tie with former left-handed hurler - and Atlanta Braves draft pick - Chris Masters (241, 2007-09) ... Null is just one of 15 different Catamount hurlers to surpass 200 career strikeouts;

- Junior Tyler Powell's 10 career saves keep him in a tie for eighth in program history ... Powell matched former reliever Derrick Hawk (10, 2003-05) ... With eight saves this spring, Powell ranks tied for eighth with David Pember (8 in 1998) and Daniel Ottone (8 in 2009) on WCU's single-season ledgers ... All told, Powell ranks tied for 16th in career appearances with 70 through his first three seasons;

- Junior Jacob Hoyle moved into a tie for 22nd in program history with his 27th career home run, coming as a part of his fourth career two-home run game on Sunday ... Of his four multi-homer games, three have come this season;

- Aaron Attaway moved into a tie for 15th for hits in a career at WCU, currently sitting with 261 career base hits to match former Catamount Rod Goldston (261, 2000-03) ... Attaway ranks tied for 18th in school history with 176 runs scored, by-passing former WCU great, Keith LeClair (175, 1985-88) last weekend;

- Junior infielder Bradley Strong maintains sole possession of third-place on WCU's career triples charts with his 12 triples ... With 12 three-baggers in his career, Strong broke the tie with former Catamount Freddie Hailey who had 11 from 1984-87 ... Strong is just three triples shy of matching all-time record holder Martin Barrow (15, 1995-98);

- Strong ranks tied for 14th place with 41 career stolen bases, matching Blake Murphy (2004-08) ... Aaron Attaway is just behind Strong in a tie for 17th with 38 thefts in his career.

This Week in Catamount Baseball:
- Western Carolina has four games scheduled this week ... the Catamounts close out the month of April with a midweek, nonconference neutral field game against Atlantic Coast Conference foe, Wake Forest, at Keeter Stadium in Shelby, N.C., site of the American Legion World Series ... It will represent the first-ever neutral site meeting between WCU and Wake ... WCU then hosts archrival Appalachian State for a three-game series at Childress Field / Hennon Stadium in Cullowhee to open up the month of May;

- WCU is scheduled to face Wake Forest on Wednesday night ... the Catamounts and Demon Deacons split the regular season meetings in 2013, both winning on their respective home fields ... WCU won in Cullowhee, 7-2, in late February with Wake Forest winning in Winston-Salem, 3-1, in late March ... the Catamounts trail in the all-time series which dates back to 1971, 4-5, with eight of the nine meetings being played in Winston-Salem;
