Western Carolina Baseball Knocks Off #15 Clemson, 18-10
Senior catcher Adam Martin collected a game-high four base hits including his team-leading second home run of the season while classmate Cody Jones matched a career-high with five runs driven in as Western Carolina scored in bunches to upset No. 15 Clemson, 18-10, Tuesday night in nonconference action at Childress Field / Hennon Stadium.

Catamount Diamond Notes:
- Western Carolina went 3-1 last week, outlasting Winthrop in 13 innings on a cold and windy night in Rock Hill, S.C., before falling at No. 29 Tennessee, 6-2 ... WCU saw 17-consecutive hitters retired by Volunteers' pitching in the final five-plus innings in Knoxville ... the Catamounts then weathered The Citadel, taking the two games played - 5-4 in the first game which began on Saturday before rain forced it to be suspended ... the Catamounts rallied to win the opener before powering past the Bulldogs, 8-2 to win the series;

- With the two wins last weekend over The Citadel, the Catamounts have now won 27 of their last 32 regular season Southern Conference games ... The losses have come to Furman (3), Elon (1) and Appalachian State (1);

- With the three victories last week, WCU seventh-year head coach Bobby Moranda has 221 career victories to move into sole possession of fourth-place all-time in program history, by-passing long-time head coach Bill Haywood who recorded a 215-161-2 record in Cullowhee ... With 111 career SoCon wins, Moranda ranks second in WCU history behind Todd Raleigh who won 132 SoCon games at the head of the Catamount program;

 

 

- Senior Taylor Sandefur led the Catamounts above the minimums in batting average last week, finishing 5-for-11 (.455) with a double and two RBI ... junior Bradley Strong, who earned SoCon Player of the Week accolades, collected a team-best seven hits including five doubles while driving home three ... Strong had a team-best, .667 slugging percentage ... Senior Adam Martin finished last week with a 6-for-17 plate performance including a team-best four RBI ... Martin broke a season-long streak of 11-consecutive games without a home run, collecting his ninth round-tripper on a two-run shot in game one against The Citadel;

- Senior outfielder Dykota Spiess returned to the WCU lineup and delivered the game-winning double to right center field in the home half of the eighth inning as the Catamounts took the suspended series opener, 5-4 ... the game-winning hit was particularly poignant for Spiess, who was not in the original starting lineup after his father passed away on Thursday night ... He drew a walk as a pinch hitter in the fourth before his dramatic moment in the eighth inning, providing the game-winning hit as Luke Gragg scored the game-winning run for WCU;

- WCU freshman Matt Smith recorded his first two collegiate extra base hits for the Catamounts last week ... the Fredricktown, Ohio, native tripled to right center field and scored at No. 29 Tennessee before doubling off the fence in left against The Citadel ... Smith finished the week 5-for-8 (.625), posting a career-best 3-for-3 showing with a walk in Sunday's final game against the Bulldogs;

- WCU saw two sizeable offensive streaks snapped during the week ... junior Jacob Hoyle saw his career-long, 15-game hitting streak end with a 0-for-4 outing at Tennessee ... sophomore Danny Bermudez had his career-best 20-game streak of reaching base safely halted after finishing 0-for-3 with a sacrifice fly against The Citadel ... Entering the week, Adam Martin holds the team's longest active streaks with a seven-game hitting streak and has reached base safely in nine-consecutive games;

- Western Carolina's pitching staff posted a 3.92 collective ERA on the week, surrendering a total of 18 runs with 17 earned ... Senior right-handers T.J. Fussell and Jordan Smith had impressive weeks for the Catamounts on the mound ... Fussell made two relief appearances, posting a 2-0 record with a 1.35 ERA after allowing just one run in 6.2 innings while striking out nine without issuing a walk ... Smith worked his fifth career complete game, striking out a season-best 10 against two free passes in the 8-2 win over The Citadel to finish off the series win;

- Several Catamounts enter the week ranked among the top 10 in the Southern Conference in several statistical categories: Cody Jones ranks eighth in batting average at .340 and is tied for third in base hits (55) including 12 doubles to rank tied for fourth ... Bradley Strong leads the conference in runs scored (45) while ranking fifth in hits (54) including 13 doubles (tied for second) and five triples (tied for first) ... Strong also has six sacrifice bunts to rank tied for fourth while his 16 stolen bases have him tied for third in the SoCon ... Adam Martin continues to lead the conference with 46 RBI while Jones (36) is seventh with Jacob Hoyle and Bradley Strong tied for 8th with 35 runs driven in ... Hoyle is tied for the SoCon lead with 10 home runs with Martin is tied for third with nine round-trippers ... Martin has six sacrifice flies to rank second while Hoyle is tied for third with five ... In addition, Martin is fourth in the SoCon in slugging percentage (.597);

- Entering the week, Jeremy Null leads the Southern Conference in batters struck out with 69 Ks on the year - a mark that includes a league-leading 27 batters struck out looking ... Null's 70.1 innings pitched are second-most among league hurlers and his 1.79 ERA ranks second in the league, while his .212 opposing batting average against ranks third in the SoCon ... Tyler Powell's eight saves have him tied for third in the league ... Jordan Smith has tossed 69.1 innings this season, third in the SoCon;

- Jacob Hoyle has been a part of turning 34 double-plays this season, the most in the SoCon ... Bradley Strong has been a part of 25 to rank tied for fourth in the league.

Catamount Career Charts Watch:
- Senior starting pitcher Jordan Smith made his 54th career start on Sunday against The Citadel to become the school record holder, by-passing the previous record of 53 set by Jack Kimel from 1989-92 ... Smith has 23 career wins to assume sole possession of seventh place in program history, breaking the tie with Jerry Reed who won 22 games from 1974-77;

- Smith remains fourth in program history with 339.0 career innings pitched - he is just the fourth different Catamount hurler to eclipse 300 career innings on the mound ... Smith is also sixth on the career strikeouts ledger, currently with 258 career Ks;

- Junior RHP Jeremy Null moved into a tie for seventh-place in WCU's career record books with 241 career Ks, matching former left-handed hurler - and Atlanta Braves draft pick - Chris Masters (241, 2007-09) ... Null is just one of 15 different Catamount hurlers to surpass 200 career strikeouts;

- Junior Tyler Powell picked up his 10th career save over the weekend, moving into a tie for eighth in program history ... Powell matched former reliever Derrick Hawk (10, 2003-05) ... With eight saves this spring, Powell ranks tied for eighth with David Pember (8 in 1998) and Daniel Ottone (8 in 2009) on WCU's single-season ledgers ... All told, Powell ranks tied for 17th in career appearances with 69;

- Western Carolina senior Aaron Attaway returned to the starting lineup over the weekend, playing in his 201st career game with his 198th career start to rank ninth, the most on the active WCU roster ... the Morganton, N.C., native had his streak of 196-straight games played and started snapped at UNCG;

- Attaway ranks 16th for hits in a career at WCU, currently sitting with 260 career base hits ... the Morganton, N.C., native by-passed former Catamount Todd Buchanan (258, 2000-03) and is just one behind Rod Goldston (261, 2000-03) for 15th ... Attaway ranks tied for 18th in school history with 175 runs scored, matching former WCU great, Keith LeClair (175, 1985-88);

- Junior infielder Bradley Strong maintains sole possession of third-place on WCU's career triples charts with his 12 triples ... With 12 three-baggers in his career, Strong broke the tie with former Catamount Freddie Hailey who had 11 from 1984-87 ... Strong is just three triples shy of matching all-time record holder Martin Barrow (15, 1995-98);

- Strong additionally moved into a tie for 14th place with 41 career stolen bases, matching Blake Murphy (2004-08) ... Aaron Attaway is just behind Strong in a tie for 17th with 38 thefts in his career.

This Week in Catamount Baseball:
- Western Carolina has four games scheduled this week, all coming on the road ... WCU opens a five-game swing away from the friendly confines of Childress Field / Hennon Stadium on Wednesday night against nationally-ranked Clemson, which is ranked as high as 20th in two polls and 22nd in a third ... the Catamounts then return to league road action with three games at Samford in Birmingham, Ala.;

- WCU visits Clemson on Wednesday after the Tigers were scheduled to host Liberty on Tuesday night ... the Catamounts trail Clemson in the all-time series, 16-56 - but a combined 11 of the 16 series victories over the Tigers have come in Cullowhee - WCU is just 5-39 all-time on the road in the series ... WCU has only swept the two regular season meetings with the Tigers once since the two started playing in 1978 - WCU won the home-and-home meetings in 2012, winning in Cullowhee, 8-4, before downing Clemson at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, 13-9;

- In the first meeting with Clemson, WCU knocked off the No. 15 Tigers, 18-10, despite leading 18-4 going into the top of the ninth inning ... the Catamounts scored all 18 of their runs before the fifth inning, producing all it would need in a four-inning stretch including a trio of big innings ... Adam Martin collected a team-best four hits (4-for-5) with a double, home run and three RBI while Cody Jones drove home five and Bradley Strong plating three runners;

- Western Carolina travels to Birmingham, Ala., for a three-game series against the Bulldogs this weekend ... the Catamounts won all four meetings with the Bulldogs a season ago, sweeping the series in Cullowhee and winning its opener in the SoCon Tournament ... WCU dropped all three games at Samford in the most recent series played in Birmingham - and have lost5-of-6 on the road in the series dating back to 2010.
