Cullowhee, N.C. - Stemming from its second-consecutive Southern Conference series sweep last weekend, Western Carolina swept the weekly baseball awards selected and released today by the conference office. Junior catcher Adam Martin was tabbed the SoCon's Player of the Week while right-handed hurler Jeremy Null captured Pitcher of the Week accolades.
Null was additionally tagged as a "Louisville Slugger" National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball for the second time this season - and the 11th by a Catamount since 2002 - for his performance in the Friday night win over Georgia Southern. Null captured his first-ever national honor after his 13-strikeout performance in the season-opening win over Washington State back on Feb. 18.
Null garnered the second SoCon weekly honor for the Catamount pitching staff which enters this week ranked third in the SoCon in team ERA (4.41) and leading the league in wins (26), strikeouts (355), saves (12) and innings pitched (379.2). Martin gives WCU its second weekly player of the week honor, joining senior Tyler White who earned the award back on March 12.
Martin hit a staggering .727 (8-for-11) with four walks, seven RBIs and five runs scored as the Catamounts went 4-0 last week with a win over Gardner-Webb and a sweep of Georgia Southern. The Marietta, Ga., posted five extra-base hits in the four games, rapping out four doubles and a home run. He amassed a 1.364 slugging percentage and a .800 on-base percentage, reaching successfully in his last 10 plate appearances.
In last Wednesday night's 9-6 win over the Runnin' Bulldogs on Wednesday, Martin entered as a pinch-hitter and stayed in to catch. He went 1-for-2 with a go-ahead, three-run homer in the Catamount win.
Against Georgia Southern on Friday, Martin was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored. The next day, he finished 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, a walk and a run scored. He capped his week with another 3-for-3 showing Sunday, collecting a pair of doubles, walking and scoring twice and driving in two runs. He started Sunday's game in right field before moving to catcher and was instrumental in locking up the 7-4 win, catching a foul ball behind the plate and throwing out a runner trying to steal in the ninth.
All told, Martin, who missed time behind the plate nursing a broken finger on his glove hand, has raised his seasonal batting average 111 total points since April 12, doing so within his current six-game hitting streak. The versatile player opened his current streak with a 4-for-4 outing against Samford and includes nine total RBI.
The weekly award is the first in Martin's career at WCU. He was additionally named the SoCon's Player of the Week by College Sports Madness (collegesportsmadness.com).
Null threw a gem Friday against the Eagles to set the tone for the series, striking out a career-high 14 batters and not issuing a walk in the 9-3 win. He settled after surrendering three earned runs on four hits in the second and third innings, recording 10 straight outs via strikeout between the fourth and seventh innings.
The sophomore right-hander from Claremont, N.C., held GSU to just three runs on five hits in eight innings in improving to 4-2 on the season.
With his third double-digit strikeout performance of the season, Null moved his season total to a league-best 74 Ks.
First-place Western Carolina, which has won seven straight games and eight consecutive against SoCon opponents, plays two midweek games this week beginning on Tuesday evening as the Catamounts host Kennesaw State at 5 p.m. WCU visits No. 13/25 Clemson on Wednesday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium with first pitch at 6:30 pm.
