Cullowhee, N.C. -
Due to a scheduling conflict, the Western Carolina - Coastal Carolina game that was scheduled to be played in Cullowhee on Wednesday, May 9 has been cancelled. In light of that cancellation, and to help replace games missed due to weather constraints, WCU head coach Todd Raleigh today announced the addition of a two-game series against Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio.
The Catamounts will visit the Buckeyes on Tuesday, May 8 at 6:35 pm, with an afternoon game on Wednesday, May 9 set for a 1:00 pm first pitch. Both games will be broadcast by the Catamount Sports Network and can be heard locally in Western North Carolina on WWCU-FM, Power 90dot5 in Cullowhee or online at www.WWCUFM.com.
"Every year, due to circumstances beyond our control, games are going to be missed," explained Raleigh. "With the rain out at Kentucky back in early April, and now this scheduling conflict with Coastal, we were looking to add a few additional quality games to replace those quality opponents. Ohio State contacted us and expressed an interest in playing since they, too, have missed a few games, and things just worked out with open dates on the schedule."
According to available records, Western and Ohio State have met on the diamond nine times with the most recent coming in 1983 when the Catamounts and Buckeyes split a four-game series in Columbus. WCU dropped the first and fourth games of that series, giving OSU a one-game winning streak all-time versus the Cats.
In the latest college baseball RPI (updated April 20), Ohio State is 79th, while Western Carolina is currently ranked 40th. Also, back on April 9, Ohio State was ranked 29th in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll.
Western returns to action on Friday evening, opening a three-game Southern Conference set against second-place Elon at 7:00 pm at Childress Field/Hennon Stadium. Saturday's game two is set for 4:00 pm, with first pitch in the series finale scheduled for 2:00 pm on Sunday afternoon.
