Catamount Baseball Rides Fifth Inning Rally to Blank Winthrop, 8-0
Western Carolina broke a scoreless tie in the home half of the fifth inning, pushing across five runs on three hits en route to blanking the visiting Winthrop Eagles, 8-0, Tuesday afternoon in the 2014 home opener at Childress Field / Hennon Stadium.

Catamount Diamond Notes:
- Western Carolina went 3-2 last week, blanking Presbyterian in Cullowhee and defeating UNC Asheville on the road at Greenwood Field, 9-3 ... the Catamounts dropped their first Southern Conference series of the year, losing two-straight to Furman, 9-6 and 6-1, after taking the series opener, 5-4;

- Saturday's home loss to Furman halted Western Carolina's 12-game winning streak, which had been the longest active streak in the nation at the time ... the 12-game streak was the ninth, double-digit winning streak for the Catamount baseball team since joining the Southern Conference in 1977 ... It matched the second-longest such win streak in program history, tying the 12-game streak by the 1996 Catamount squad ... WCU's longest consecutive-game winning streak is 13 accomplished back in March of 1991 - that squad finished with a record of 36-26;

- With Sunday's home loss to Furman, Western Carolina's streak of 10-consecutive Southern Conference series wins dating back to last season was halted ... It was the first SoCon series loss since dropping 2-of-3 at home to the Phoenix in late March, 2013 - a total of 385 days between SoCon series losses ... Despite the two losses, the Catamounts have won 25 of their last 30 regular season league games ... The losses have come to Furman (3), Elon (1) and Appalachian State (1);

 

 

- Western Carolina enters the week having lost consecutive games for the first time since falling to East Tennessee State (March 19) and the series opener at Elon (March 21);

- With the three victories last week, WCU seventh-year head coach Bobby Moranda has 218 career victories to move into sole possession of fourth-place all-time in program history, by-passing long-time head coach Bill Haywood who recorded a 215-161-2 record in Cullowhee ... With 109 career SoCon wins, Moranda ranks second in WCU history behind Todd Raleigh who won 132 SoCon games at the head of the Catamount program;

- Senior Cody Jones and junior Bradley Strong led the regular starters last week with matching .364 (8-for-22) batting averages on the week ... Both had three extra base hits - Jones two doubles and a triple, driving in a team-high seven while Strong had a double and two home runs, plating six runners ... Jones saw his career-long, 14-game hitting streak snapped against Furman;

- Senior Adam Martin got back on track with a 6-for-17 week including a team-best 6-for-9 (.667) average over the weekend against Furman ... Martin had a .786 on-base percentage over the weekend with three walks and two HBPs;

- WCU's pitching staff posted a 3.40 collective ERA on the week, surrendering a total of 22 runs with 17 earned ... Freshman Bryan Sammons made three appearances on the week with a start (and win) against Presbyterian and twice coming out of the bullpen ... He posted 11 strikeouts including a career-high tying seven in 4.2 innings of relief work against Furman;

- Junior Jacob Hoyle enters the week riding a career-long 14-game hitting streak ... He has also recorded hits in 16-straight home games entering The Citadel series this weekend ... During his current 14-game hit streak, Hoyle is batting .382 with 21 hits including nine for extra bases, seven as home runs ... He also has seven, two-hit games and four multi-RBI outings ... Sophomore Danny Bermudez has reached base safely in a career-long, 19-straight games;

- Several Catamounts enter the week ranked among the top 10 in the Southern Conference in several statistical categories: Cody Jones ranks fifth in batting average at .357 and is third in base hits (51) including 12 doubles to rank tied for third ... Adam Martin leads the SoCon with 42 RBI while Jacob Hoyle is tied for 6th with 34 runs driven in ... Hoyle is tied for the SoCon lead with 10 home runs with Martin is tied for fourth with eight round-trippers ... the two are tied for second with five sacrifice flies apiece ... In addition, Martin is fourth in the SoCon in slugging percentage (.607) ... Bradley Strong is tied for the SoCon lead in triples with five while also leading the league in runs scored (41), and fifth with five sacrifice bunts;

- Entering the week, Jeremy Null leads the Southern Conference in batters struck out with 68 Ks on the year - a mark that includes a league-leading 26 batters struck out looking ... Null's 66.1 innings pitched are most among league hurlers and his 1.63 ERA ranks second in the league, while his .207 opposing batting average against ranks third in the SoCon ... Tyler Powell's seven saves have him tied for fourth in the league ... Jordan Smith has tossed 60.1 innings this season, tied for third in the SoCon;

- Jacob Hoyle has been a part of turning 30 double-plays this season, tied for the most in the SoCon ... Bradley Strong has been a part of 22 to rank tied for sixth in the league.

Catamount Career Charts Watch:
- Senior starting pitcher Jordan Smith made his 53rd career start on Sunday against Furman, moving into a tie for FIRST PLACE in school history, matching the all-time school record of 53 set by Jack Kimel from 1989-92 ... Smith has 22 career wins to remain in a tie for seventh place in program history, matching Jerry Reed who won 22 games from 1974-77;

- Smith remains fourth in program history with 330.0 career innings pitched - he is just the fourth different Catamount hurler to eclipse 300 career innings on the mound ... Smith is also sixth on the career strikeouts ledger, currently with 248 career Ks to by-pass former left-handed hurler - and Atlanta Braves draft pick - Chris Masters (241, 2007-09);

- Junior RHP Jeremy Null moved into eighth-place in WCU's career record books with 240 career Ks ... Null by-passed former Catamount Rick Adair (238, 1977-79) ... Null is just one of 15 different Catamount hurlers to surpass 200 career strikeouts;

- Junior Tyler Powell picked up his ninth career save over the weekend, moving into a tie for ninth in program history ... Powell matched former relievers David Pember (9, 1997-99) and Dan Kyslinger (9, 1992) ... With seven saves this spring, Powell ranks tied for ninth with seven others on WCU's single-season ledgers;

- Powell ranks tied for 17th in career appearances with 68, matching former Catamounts Andrew Chilcoat (2010-11) and Clark Maxwell (1994-97)

- Western Carolina senior Aaron Attaway remained out of the starting lineup in all five games last week ... the Morganton, N.C., native had his streak of 196-straight games played and started snapped at UNCG ... Playing in Friday's win over Furman, he now has 198 career games played, the most on the active WCU roster;

- Attaway ranks 16th for hits in a career at WCU, currently sitting with 260 career base hits ... the Morganton, N.C., native by-passed former Catamount Todd Buchanan (258, 2000-03) and is just one behind Rod Goldston (261, 2000-03) for 15th;

- Junior infielder Bradley Strong maintains sole possession of third-place on WCU's career triples charts with his 12 triples ... With 12 three-baggers in his career, Strong broke the tie with former Catamount Freddie Hailey who had 11 from 1984-87 ... Strong is just three triples shy of matching all-time record holder Martin Barrow (15, 1995-98);

- Strong additionally moved into a tie for 16th place with 38 career stolen bases, matching Charles Thomas (1998-2000), another former Atlanta Braves draft pick ... Aaron Attaway is just behind Strong in a tie for 18th with 37 thefts in his career.

This Week in Catamount Baseball:
- Western Carolina has four games scheduled this week including Tuesday's road meeting with Winthrop before returning home to host The Citadel for a three-game Southern Conference series ... The Catamounts and Bulldogs are the two winningest programs in SoCon history, both with a combined 21 conference regular season and tournament championships.

- This season, the Catamounts are 14-3 at Childress Field / Hennon Stadium this season and are batting a collective .338 overall as a team with 168 hits including 68 for extra bases (39 doubles, eight triples and 21 home runs);

- WCU travels to Winthrop (18-21, 9-6 Big South) on Tuesday for the back-end of the nonconference midweek home-and-home ... the Catamounts blanked the Eagles, 8-0, in Cullowhee back on February 18 with freshman Bryan Sammons scoring his first career victory just days after his first career save at No. 2 Mississippi State ... Winthrop dropped 2-of-3 over the weekend against Presbyterian, a team WCU shut out 16-0 in Cullowhee last week ... the Eagles are batting .234 as a team but boast a 3.10 overall ERA on the pitching staff;

- In the first meeting with Winthrop, WCU broke a scoreless tie in the home half of the fifth inning with five runs on three hits ... Bradley Strong drew a bases loaded HBP before Cody Jones drove home two on a double down the right field line ... Three Catamounts had multi-hit games ... Catamount pitching combined for 11 strikeouts in the win;

- Western Carolina returns home to host The Citadel (14-23, 2-13 SoCon) for a three-game Southern Conference series in Cullowhee ... the Bulldogs took the series opener at Appalachian State last weekend, but lost the next two to the Mountaineers ... The Citadel has lost six of its last seven games overall ... It is the second-straight season WCU has hosted The Citadel in Cullowhee, winning 2-of-3 over the Bulldogs a year ago -7-6 and 5-4 before falling 5-4 in the series finale ... the Bulldogs claimed a 12-11 slugfest win over WCU in the SoCon Tournament in Greenville, S.C.
