Cullowhee, N.C. -
Western Carolina's Becca Twiner (women's golf) and Jared Greenwood (baseball) have been named the Arby's/Catamount Student-Athletes of the Month for March.
Twiner, a senior from Crystal River, Fla., used a late charge to take first place in the final round of the Lady Herd - El Diablo Intercollegiate in Citrus Springs, Fla., which is just outside her hometown. She shot 69 on day three and ended the tournament with a three-round score of 219, bettering Florida Atlantic's Natalia Navarro by one stroke. This marked the second time that Twiner took home medalist honors, also winning the 2001 Belmont Lady Bruin Invitational. Her three-round score of 219 ties for the fourth-lowest in WCU history. Twiner improved her spring season stroke average by 8.5 strokes after the El Diablo Tournament.
Twiner, a member of last year's SoCon Champion women's golf team, will lead the Cats in this year's league championship, which will be played in Greensboro, N.C., at Star Mount Country Club from April 23-25.
Greenwood, a junior from Franklin, N.C., batted a team-best .324 for the month with seven of his 12 home runs on the season coming in the month. Not only did he lead the team in batting average and home runs in March, but he also drove in a team-best 22 runs in the month, had a team-best .444 on-base percentage and scored 15 runs, third-best on the team. Greenwood, who ranks second in the SoCon with his 12 homers and third in the league with 41 RBI on the season, is batting .312 on the season. However, in SoCon action, he leads the team with a .346 batting average.
Greenwood and the WCU baseball team will resume play this weekend (April 16-18) in a three-game series at Georgia Southern. Game times are 7 pm Friday, 7 pm Saturday and 1:30 pm Sunday.
