Catamounts Use 22 Hits to Power Past Clemson, 13-8
Western Carolina pounded out a season-high 22 hits on Wednesday night as it completed its first-ever, home-and-home sweep over the Clemson Tigers with a 13-8 victory at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. WCU visits Wofford for a three-game Southern Conference series this weekend.

Catamount Diamond Notes:
- Western Carolina went 3-2 last week, splitting a midweek home-and-home with UNC Asheville before taking 2-of-3 from Furman in Greenville, S.C., at Latham Stadium ... WCU dropped the Friday night opener, 9-2, before winning game two 8-5 on Saturday and Sunday's rubber match, 9-3, in 12 innings thanks to a six-run top of the 12th;

- WCU rallied back from a 5-0 first inning deficit to upend UNC Asheville on Tuesday, halting a three-game winless streak against its mountain-rival ... UNCA handed WCU its third-straight defeat at historic McCormick Field - home of the minor league Asheville Tourists - with a 15-0 loss on Wednesday ... It was the first-ever series shutout victory for UNCA over the Catamounts;

- Western Carolina finished with 11 hits in the 12-inning affair on Sunday afternoon with junior shortstop Aaron Attaway pacing the squad with four hits ... the Morganton, N.C., native hit for the cycle, blasting a solo home run to lead-off the third inning, doubling in the fifth before tripling down the right field line in the ninth inning ... In extra innings, Attaway completed the cycle by dropping a single into right field ... It is the first cycle by a Catamount hitter in recent memory, according to available research;



- WCU played its fourth extra inning game of the year, all coming away from home ... WCU evened its record at 2-2 with its second overtime victory on Sunday ... Both extra inning wins have come against SoCon foes;

- Jacob Hoyle lead WCU offensively last week, hitting .471 with eight hits in 17 at bats including a walk and plunked by a pitch once, driving in six runs to match the team-high ... With three home runs and two doubles on the week, amassed an impressive 1.118 slugging percentage with a .526 on-base percentage ... Had two multiple-hit games including a career-high tying four-hit showing against UNCA at home ... He additionally pitched for an inning out of the bullpen, working around three walks without allowing a hit or a run;

- Catamount closer Preston Hatcher (4-2) picked up two weekend victories out of the bullpen last week giving him a pitching staff-best four victories on the mound ... He has four wins to go along with his seven saves on the year ... Opponents hit just .182 against Hatcher on the week, who also had his first two collegiate at bats - laying down a picture perfect sacrifice bunt in the decisive 12th inning of the series finale on Sunday;

Catamount Career Charts Watch:
- WCU closer Preston Hatcher has seven saves this season and 17 for his four-year career ... He moved into a tie for NINTH in WCU's single-season record book with the seven seasonal saves and is now FIFTH all-time in WCU's career record books by-passing Ward Withrow who had 16 saves from 1987-88 ... Hatcher is just two saves shy of current Kansas City Royal pitcher Greg Holland's three-year record of 19 for fourth ... WCU's career record holder is Ryan Foster who had 22 saves from 2000-2003;

- Hatcher additionally moved into 13th in school history with 73 career appearances, matching former hurler Daniel Ottone who had also had 71 appearances from 2007-10;

- Senior infielder Tyler White has moved into a tie for 14th place in WCU's record books for doubles, now with 50 in his career to tie ... He is tied former Catamount Todd Roper (2001-04) ... White additionally ranks tied for seventh with J.P. Burwell (1994-97) in hit by pitches (HBP) with 33 and is tied for fifth in sacrifice flies with 12, matching Ross Heffley (2009-12) and Blake Murphy (2004-08);

- Junior RHP Jordan Smith remains 19th in the school ledgers for career strikeouts with 173, by-passing Stewart Keyes (20th, 168 K's from 1986-89) and Dale Pilgrim (21st, 166 K's from 1993-96) ... Next on the list is former RHP Matt Benedict who had 174 K's from 2008-11 ... Smith's 37 career starts over the last three seasons rank him tied for 13th on the career ledger, tied with Tyler Sexton (2006-08), Ryan Basner 2000-03) and Paul Menhart (1988-90).

- Western Carolina plays four games this week with one midweek game against the nationally-ranked Clemson Tigers before welcoming the Samford Bulldogs to Cullowhee for a three-game Southern Conference set this weekend;

- WCU's Tuesday evening game against Clemson is the front end of the annual home-and-home with the Tigers with the Catamounts visiting Doug Kingsmore Stadium on April 24 ... Clemson (21-11) moved into the national rankings this week - 22nd according to Baseball America and 17th in the Collegiate Baseball rankings ... the Catamounts are riding a two-game winning streak over Clemson, taking both ends of the two-game, home-and-home series a year ago for the first time ever - WCU won in Cullowhee, 8-4, before pounding out 22 hits in a 13-9 road win at Doug Kingsmore Stadium;

- Clemson head coach Jack Leggett returns to Cullowhee with his nationally-ranked Tigers squad ... Leggett is WCU's all-time winningest head coach, collecting 302 wins including 103 in Southern Conference play during his nine-year head coaching career ... He guided WCU to five-straight NCAA regional appearances from 1985 through 1989;

- Clemson assistant coach Bradley LeCroy -- a 2000 Clemson graduate -- was on staff in Cullowhee with former skipper Todd Raleigh for two seasons in 2006 and '07, helping guide the Catamounts to the Chapel Hill NCAA regional in 2007;

- Samford rolls into town on Friday for a three-game SoCon series at Childress Field / Hennon Stadium ... the Catamounts look to snap a five-game losing skid to the Bulldogs, dropping all four meetings a year ago including three in Birmingham and SoCon Tournament opener at Fluor Field and the series finale in Cullowhee in 2011 ... WCU has won both series meetings with the Bulldogs in Cullowhee since Samford joined the SoCon, taking both by 2-to-1 counts in both 2009 and 2011.
