Catamount Offense Stymied by Bulldogs in Road Loss
Western Carolina was limited to a season-low three base hits on Wednesday night as UNC Asheville blanked the Catamounts, 15-0, in mid-week, nonconference action at historic McCormick Field. The Bulldogs pounded out a season-high 20 hits in splitting the two series meetings this week.

Catamount Diamond Notes:
- Western Carolina went 3-0 last week, sweeping the Wofford Terriers in Cullowhee ... the mid-week game against East Tennessee State was canceled due to inclement weather - no make-up date has been announced ... WCU improved to 64-17 all-time against Wofford including a 42-6 mark in games played in Cullowhee ... the Catamounts have won all 10 league series meetings in Cullowhee including six series sweeps since the Terriers joined the SoCon;

- After sweeping Wofford over the weekend, Western Carolina has now won NINE-straight Southern Conference series dating back to last season since dropping 2-of-3 at home to the Phoenix in late March, 2013 ... the Catamounts have won 21 of their last 23 regular season league games;

- Western Carolina enters the week having won eight of its last 10 games on the year including five-straight, all in conference play ... Tuesday's home date against mountain-rival UNC Asheville wraps up a four-game home stand for the Purple & Gold;

- With the three conference victories over the weekend, WCU seventh-year head coach Bobby Moranda now has 105 career wins in league play - a number that moved him into second place in school history, by-passing all-time winningest head coach, Jack Leggett, who won 103 of the 142 SoCon games he coached (103-39) ... Moranda is now 105-76-1 in conference play at WCU;



- Senior Cody Jones led the Catamounts in the series sweep of Wofford, hitting 6-for-14 (.429) with three extra base hits including two doubles and his first home run of the season ... Classmate Adam Martin had another strong weekend, batting 5-for-12 (.417) with four of his five hits going for extra bases including a double and three home runs ... Martin accounted for nine of WCU's 26 RBI on the weekend with Bradley Strong driving in five ... All told, WCU batted .313 (30-for-96) with 15 extra base hits - nine doubles and six homers - over the three-games;

- In addition to Jones belting his first home run of the season, senior Luke Gragg collected his first extra base hit of the year on his first home run of the season ... Senior Aaron Attaway added a home run for the Catamounts in the three-game set;

- WCU's pitching staff posted a collective 2.67 ERA against the Terriers, limiting Wofford to nine runs, eight of which were earned ... the Catamount pitchers recorded 28 strikeouts including nine by senior T.J. Fussell, eight by Jeremy Null and five Jordan Smith;

- Several Catamounts enter the week ranked among the top 10 in the Southern Conference in several statistical categories: Senior Adam Martin leads the SoCon in slugging percentage (.739) and RBI (38), while also ranking tied for second in home runs (8), second in sacrifice flies (5), third in total bases (65), fifth in batting average (.375), eighth in on-base percentage (.439) ... Bradley Strong ranks tied for first with five sacrifice bunts, second in runs scored (30), 10th in on-base percentage (.432) ... Jacob Hoyle ranks tied for seventh with five home runs and is tied for eighth with 25 RBI;

- Jeremy Null leads the Southern Conference in batters struck out with 52 Ks on the year - a mark that includes a league-leading 23 batters struck out looking ... Null's 51.1 innings pitched are most among league hurlers and his 1.58 ERA ranks third in the league, while his .194 opposing batting average against ranks second in the SoCon ... Tyler Powell's three saves have him tied for seventh while the two saves for Colton Davis have the sophomore tied for 10th ... Jordan Smith has tossed 44.1 innings this season, fourth in the SoCon;

- Adam Martin enters the week riding a team-long, 11-game hitting streak, currently tied for the second-longest active streak in the conference ... Martin has reached safely in 12-straight games ... Cody Jones enters the week having reached base safely in 17-consecutive games including a current eight-game hitting streak ... Jones has hits in 16 of his last 17 games ... Bradley Strong has reached safely in 14-straight games while Danny Bermudez has reached in 10-consecutive games.

Catamount Career Charts Watch:
- Western Carolina senior Aaron Attaway has played in 195-straight career games, starting all 195 of his collegiate career ... According to available research, Attaway's active 195-career start streak is the second-longest in the NCAA - just one behind William & Mary senior, Ryan Lindemuth (196) ... From the same research, Attaway has the most starts among players who have started every game of their careers;

- Attaway moved into 16th place over the weekend for hits in a career, currently sitting with 259 career base hits ... the Morganton, N.C., native by-passed former Catamount Todd Buchanan (258, 2000-03) and is just TWO behind Rod Goldston (261, 2000-03) for 15th;

- With two sacrifice flies over the weekend, Attaway moved into a tie for SEVENTH in school history with 12 sac flies ... Attaway matched former teammate Ross Heffley (12, 2009-12) and Blake Murphy (12, 2004-08) ... Junior Jacob Hoyle had one sac fly at Elon to move into a tie for FIFTH on the same list, matching Steven Strausbaugh (13, 2005-07) while senior Adam Martin drove in a run on a sac fly versus the Phoenix to give him 11, in a four-way tie for 10th with Stephen Notaro (2008-11), Barrett Shaft (2005-08) and Todd Roper (2001-04);

- Senior starting pitcher Jordan Smith remained in sole possession of third place in school history with his 51st career start on Sunday ... He is just TWO starts shy of matching the all-time school record of 53 set by Jack Kimel from 1989-92 ... Smith claimed his 21st career win on Sunday, moving into eighth place in program history, by-passing former pitchers Tyler Sexton (2006-08), Brian Bain (1995-98), and Ken Hare (1980, 82-84) each with 20 career victories;

- Smith remains FOURTH in program history with 314.0 career innings pitched - he is just the fourth Catamount hurler to eclipse 300 career innings on the mound ... Smith also advanced into a tie for SEVENTH on the career strikeouts ledger, currently with 238 to match former Catamount Rick Adair (1977-79) who went on to be a third-round draft pick by Seattle in '79;

- Junior RHP Jeremy Null moved into 10th in WCU's career record books with 224 career Ks ... Null eclipsed the 217 Ks by former Catamount LHP Tyler Sexton (2006-08) ... Null is just one of 15 different Catamount hurlers to surpass 200 career strikeouts;

- Junior infielder Bradley Strong remains third on WCU's career charts with 11 career triples ... With 11 three-baggers in his career, Strong is now tied for third with former Catamount Freddie Hailey who had 11 from 1984-87 ... Strong is just four triples shy of matching all-time record holder Martin Barrow (15, 1995-98);

- Strong additionally moved into a tie for 19th with 36 career stolen bases, matching Kevin Bellomo (1988-91) ... Aaron Attaway is just ahead of Strong in a tie for 17th with 37 thefts in his career.

This Week in Catamount Baseball:
- Western Carolina has four games scheduled this week including Tuesday's home date with mountain-rival UNC Asheville before traveling to UNCG for a second-straight year in SoCon play ... WCU split the two regular season meetings with the Bulldogs last year, winning in Cullowhee 13-9 before falling, 15-0, to the Bulldogs in a neutral field contest at historic McCormick Field ... Following the shutout defeat, WCU rallied to win 21 of its final 25 games of the regular season;

- UNC Asheville (9-18, 3-6 Big South) comes to Cullowhee after dropping 2-of-3 games at Winthrop over the weekend ... the Bulldogs have lost three of their last four games - and four of their last seven ... UNCA, under the leadership of head coach Tom Smith who is a 1976 graduate of WCU, is just 5-13 away from home this season ... WCU leads the all-time series with UNCA, 47-26 - but the Bulldogs have won four of the last five dating back to 2011 ... Tuesday's meeting is the 74th all-time between WCU and UNCA;

- Western Carolina visits UNCG this weekend for a three-game SoCon set - the second-straight year the Catamounts have traveled to Greensboro ... WCU swept the three-games last season - and has won five-straight overall - but continues to trail in the head-to-head series, 25-29, including a 14-16 mark in Greensboro ... Overall, the series has seen five, three-game series sweeps - all coming in Greensboro ... WCU has swept while UNCG twice (2009 & 2013) while the Spartans have swept WCU three times (2000, 2003, 2011).
