Cullowhee, N.C. - After ominous forecasts earlier in the week forced the postponement of Western Carolina's 2007 baseball season opener at High Point, the Catamounts will finally take to the diamond today in game one of a three-game set against Kennesaw State in Kennesaw, Ga.
First pitch on Friday is set for 4:00 pm. Fans can follow all of the action LIVE on GameTracker, presented by West Care Health System and Carolina West Sports Medicine, on CatamountSports.com.
Western was predicted to finish anywhere from first to third in preseason publications, with the Southern Conference preseason polls tabbing the Catamounts second behind the College of Charleston. A trio of Catamounts, including outfielder Steven Strausbaugh, third baseman Jonathan Greene, and relief pitcher Greg Holland were all named to the preseason first team, with outfielder Barrett Shaft and left-handed pitcher Tyler Sexton named to the second team. Both Greene and Strausbaugh were named All-Southern Conference last season.
Kennesaw State (0-1) took No. 14 Georgia Tech to extra innings in its season opener, with the Yellow Jackets rallying from down 5-0 to win in the bottom of the 10th inning. It took a three-run home run to lift GT to the victory after the Owls used a five-run first inning to build itself a lead.
Since 2000, Western has only won two of its seven season openers, with both victories coming at home against Wright State (W, 8-5 in 2005; W, 14-4 in 2002). Four of WCU's five losses in the first game of the season have come on the road - twice at Auburn (2001, '04) and at Coastal Carolina (2003) and at Tennessee (2000).
WCU will open its home schedule next weekend, Feb. 23-25, hosting the Connecticut Huskies for a three-game set at Childress Field/Hennon Stadium. First pitch of the home opener on Friday, Feb. 23 is set for 3:00 pm.
