Winter Weather Prompts Change to Baseball Season-Opener

Feb. 12, 2014

Cullowhee, N.C. - Heavy snow across the southeast delivered by Winter Storm Pax has prompted athletic department officials at Western Carolina to alter the schedule of Catamount baseball's season-opening weekend against the Ohio Bobcats.

Friday's opener has been postponed and moved into a planned Saturday double-header with the first pitch of the year set for Noon (weather permitting) at Childress Field / Hennon Stadium. The series is scheduled to wrap-up on Sunday afternoon with game three slated for 1:00 pm.

A heavy, wet snow began falling on campus early Wednesday, covering the ground by mid-morning with snow continuing into the early afternoon. Forecasts call for the heaviest snow from the system to arrive late afternoon, early evening in western North Carolina. The decision to move Friday's game came based upon field playing conditions, as well as Ohio's travel safety.

The postponement of Friday's game also cancels the originally scheduled Catamount Sports Network broadcast of the season-opener. The first baseball radio broadcast is now scheduled for Tuesday's home date against Winthrop with a 3:45 pm air time ahead of the 4:00 pm first pitch.

Fans can keep track of the Catamount through the WCU Athletics' social media outlets on Facebook (, Twitter (@catamounts), YouTube (CatamountSports) and Instagram (wcu_catamounts).
