Cullowhee, N.C. -
Spotlighted by a third preseason All-America honor for senior infielder Aaron Attaway, three Western Carolina baseball players were honored by College Sports Madness and released online through the group's online home, CollegeSportsMadness.com.
In addition to being dubbed a first team All-Southern Conference infielder by the website, Attaway was selected as the publication's preseason SoCon Player of the Year. He additionally landed on the group's third team All-America selection - the lone representative from the conference on the four-team squad.
Joining Attaway on the College Sports Madness preseason All-SoCon first team were junior right-handed pitcher Jeremy Null and senior catcher Adam Martin. Null was picked by the league's head coaches as the preseason Pitcher of the Year as well as first teamer at starting pitcher. Martin was also a first-team honoree by the league's 10 head coaches in the official SoCon release.
The defending 2013 SoCon champion Western Carolina Catamounts continued preseason practice on Sunday afternoon with their ninth intrasquad scrimmage of the spring. Both teams used multiple pitchers in game-like scenarios. Highlighting the scrimmage offensively was a big home run over the fence in left by Attaway and three doubles from senior outfielder Cody Jones.
The 2014 Opening Day is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 14 as the Catamounts host Ohio for a three-game, nonconference set at Childress Field / Hennon Stadium.
