Macon, Ga. - Western Carolina baseball's regular season finale at Mercer was halted in the top of the fourth inning on Saturday afternoon before ultimately being cancelled due to inclement weather and unfavorable forecasts the remainder of the evening. The start of the game was delayed by just over an hour at OrthoGeorgia Park before enduring just over a 30-minute pause before the decision was handed down to end the game.

Statistics accumulated through the first three and two-thirds of the game will not count as the game did not reach the fifth inning to be considered a complete game. The games cancellation does not affect the final Southern Conference standings as the two teams had already secure the first and second seeds.

For the third-straight day, Western Carolina (28-26, 15-8 SoCon) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, doing so on a two-RBI single by Matthew Koehler. Then, after falling behind for the first-time in the three-game series, 3-2, after the bottom of the first, the Catamounts managed to knot the game at three apiece in the top of the second on a RBI double by Brett Pope to score Spencer Holcomb.

Amidst light rain showers, the Catamounts pulled ahead in the top of the third on a RBI single by Cameron Blaquiere and a second run-scoring double by Pope to pull ahead 5-3. Leading by the same margin in the top of the fourth, the Catamounts had a runner at first as Matt Smith reached on a HBP when the teams were chased from the field.

On the mound, sophomore Tristan Baker had struck out four over three innings of work, allowing three runs on five hits. But just like the offensive numbers, those will not count on the seasonal records.

Western Carolina enters the 2017 Southern Conference Baseball Championship, presented by Holston Gases, as the No. 2 seed and will face-off against No. 7 seed ETSU in first round action on Wednesday afternoon at approximately 4:00 pm at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C. The defending tournament champion Catamounts swept the Bucs in a three-game set in early April, and will be seeking their record 11th SoCon tournament title. ETSU swept VMI to end the regular season and avoid Tuesday's play-in game.

All nine Southern Conference teams will participate in the tournament, with seeds No. 8 and 9 participating in a single-elimination game on Tuesday, May 23, for the right to advance to the double-elimination portion of the bracket. The championship game will take place Sunday, May 28, at 12 p.m., with a second game, if necessary, to begin 40 minutes after the completion of the first contest. The tournament winner earns the league's automatic bid to an NCAA Baseball Regional.

Sunday's championship game(s) will be broadcast live on ESPN3, while every other contest will stream live for free on the SoCon Digital Network.

The final Southern Conference weekly awards of the regular season will be announced on Sunday afternoon, while post-season All-SoCon teams as selected by both the league's head coaches and voting media are slated to be announced on Monday, May 22.
