Cullowhee, N.C. - Brian McCullen picked up his first career win as a Catamount, pitching a career-high 6.0 innings and allowing only one run, as Western Carolina defeated UNC Asheville, 9-1, Wednesday night at Childress Field/Hennon Stadium. The Catamounts improve to 20-27 on the season, while UNCA falls to 22-25.

McCullen, a sophomore transfer from Goldsboro, only allowed four hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Jeremy Ellenburg worked the seventh and eighth innings, allowing just one hit with a strikeout. Junior Derrick Hawk wrapped up the game, pitching a perfect ninth with two strikeouts.

Offensively for the Cats, Brian Sigmon provided the big hit, getting a three-run double as part of a six run third inning. Also contributing to the WCU offense was Jared Greenwood, Todd Roper and Brandon Zollman, each of whom had two hits.

The Catamounts struck first in the bottom of the first scoring one run to make the score 1-0. Roper singled into left field and Chris Davis followed with an RBI double scoring Roper.

In the home half of the third, the Cats put the game away, sending 10 men to the plate and scoring six runs on four hits to make the score 7-0. Dustin Penland led things off by getting hit by a pitch. Zollman followed with a single to move Penland to second. Roper had an RBI single to plate Penland. After a ground out moved Zollman to third and Roper to second, Greenwood followed with an intentional walk to load the bases, setting up Sigmon's three run double. Two batters later, Sigmon scored when Denver Edick reached first and moved all the way to third on an erro. A single by Clint Ramsey scored Edick.

 

 

In the bottom of the fifth, Western scored one run to extend the lead to 8-0. Mike McGowan led the inning off with a single, and Edick followed with an RBI double down the left field line.

In the top of the sixth, the Bulldogs put one man across to make the score 8-1. Charles Pippitt led the inning off with a double and advanced to third on a balk. Steve Sherman hit a sacrifice fly to center, to drive in Pippitt.

Western capped the scoring with one run in the bottom of the seventh, providing the final 9-1 margin. Greenwood had leadoff double off the right field wall. Sigmon moved Greenwood over to third with a ground out to second. McGowan scored Greenwood with a single down the left field line, but was thrown out trying to advance to second.

Nick Jaska, David Williams, Justin Wilkins, Pippitt and Sherman each recorded a hit for the Bulldogs. Steven Cook (6-4) suffered the loss for the UNCA, allowing eight runs on eight hits.

The Cat's next game is scheduled for this weekend. Western will take on Wofford in a three game series starting Friday, May 14 at 7:00 pm. Saturday's game is set to start at noon, and Sunday's game will start at 7:00 pm. UNCA returns to action friday on the road at Birmingham Southern, the game is scheduled to start at 7:00 pm.
